Cakes so amazing they'd be hard to cut into

a cake decorated with faux vegetarian sushi
I have a co-worker that has the ability to find some of the most amazing cakes on the internet. Knowing that have an unhealthy obsession with anything edible, he is nice enough to send links to those cakes in my direction on a near-daily basis.

The cake you see above is another creation of Zoe Lukas (the woman who was also responsible for the Robert Indiana cookies, the Battlestar Galactica cake and the patriotic wedding cake). She has was charged with making a sushi-themed cake and so came up with a spiced carrot ginger cake with cream cheese icing. She topped the whole thing with fondant and used it as a "serving platter" for her tasty veggie sushi. Coconut stands in for the rice in the pieces and rolls, and she even made pickled ginger out of colored fondant.

After the jump we've got a cake decorated to look like Tom Selleck, as well as another sculpted to replicate the Millennium Falcon (made by the folks at Charm City Cakes, so you know it has got to be good).

A wedding cake fit for historical stars

a wedding cake for Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross
Tonight, Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross are getting married. If that last sentence made you sit up a little straighter and blink with confusion at your computer screen, you're not the only one. You see, the actors who play Ben and Betsy all around Philadelphia are actually the ones getting married and it has become something of a public relations spectacle here in the City of Brotherly Love. So much so that their wedding has become a public event, at which the mayor is officiating and for which a gorgeous, 4th of July-themed cake has been baked.

The cake, conceived and baked by local sugar/flour/butter artist Zoe Lukas, is what interests us most around the Slashfood office. Lukas has created a three-tiered confection that is perfectly draped in white fondant and decorated with ribbon and handmade paper fireworks (what else could one want for a 4th of July wedding). There's an interview up on uwishunu, a local Philly blog, in which Lukas delves into the creation of the cake and how she designed its unique, yet traditional look. Check out the Whipped Bakeshop Flickr page for the rest of the cake pictures.

A fraking amazing Battlestar Galactica cake

a Battlestar Galatica cake
Last Saturday night, some folks in Philly got together to throw a Battlestar Galactica party. When it came to the dessert, they knew that they didn't need to look any further than local baker Zoë Lukas (she's the one who created those those really cool Robert Indiana cookies that I posted about a few months ago).

She didn't let them down, creating a work of art out of chocolate devil's food cake. It is filled with raspberry jam and ganache, iced with chocolate buttercream and ganache, decorated with chocolate ships and explosions, silver dragees and silver and gold space dust. Lukas is in the process of opening her own bakery in Philadelphia and I think I speak for the entire when I say, we can't wait.
