Barack Obama Portrait Cookies - Feast Your Eyes

barack obama cookies
In light of today's inauguration, it seemed appropriate to feature some presidential cookies in this space. Lucky for us, Zoe Lukas of the Whipped Bakeshop created some really striking and artistic cookies featuring a print of a watercolor she did of the man who is nearly President.

Thanks Zoe!

Feast Your Eyes - Maryland "Crab Cake"

maryland crab cake
As I was scanning through the thumbnail images on the Slashfood Flickr pool, I saw this photo and thought to myself, "I wonder why someone took a picture of a crab boil." Then I noticed that it was submitted by the Whipped Bakeshop and I knew I had to take a closer look.

Turns out it isn't a crab boil at all and instead is a Maryland "Crab Cake" designed and baked for a couple who are getting married on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Everything you see, including mallets and "tin" of Old Bay Seasoning are edible.

Thanks Zoe, for adding this picture to the pool!

Feast Your Eyes: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

elvira, mistress of the dark, on a sugar cookie
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (who else remembers her from late-night TV in the eighties?) has been rendered in cookie, frosting and sugar by Zoe Lukas of the Whipped Bakeshop. These cookies are for a Halloween event in Philadelphia, at which Elvira will be appearing tonight (if you're in Philly and want to know more about Elvira's whereabouts, make sure to follow the visitphilly Twitter account).

Zoe, thanks for adding this picture to the Slashfood Flickr pool. Happy Halloween!

Handpainted sushi cookies

I continue to be absolutely astounded at the talent and skill that dessert artist Zoe Lukas has with food-safe paint, sugar and royal icing. She was charged with the creation of a batch of cookies that look like 3-dimensional pieces of sushi and I do believe that she has passed the challenge with flying colors. The only problem with these cookies is that they look far too good to eat.

Make sure to check out all of Zoe's creations on her website and Flickr page.

Feast Your Eyes: Jackie Kennedy cookie

Jackie Kennedy, on a cookie
Zoe Lukas, the artist/baker behind Philadelphia's Whipped Bakeshop (still without a brick and mortar location) is at it again, this time creating a cookie bearing Andy Warhol's rendering of America's favorite First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. Two icons on one delicious cookie? Sign me up!

Cakes so amazing they'd be hard to cut into

a cake decorated with faux vegetarian sushi
I have a co-worker that has the ability to find some of the most amazing cakes on the internet. Knowing that have an unhealthy obsession with anything edible, he is nice enough to send links to those cakes in my direction on a near-daily basis.

The cake you see above is another creation of Zoe Lukas (the woman who was also responsible for the Robert Indiana cookies, the Battlestar Galactica cake and the patriotic wedding cake). She has was charged with making a sushi-themed cake and so came up with a spiced carrot ginger cake with cream cheese icing. She topped the whole thing with fondant and used it as a "serving platter" for her tasty veggie sushi. Coconut stands in for the rice in the pieces and rolls, and she even made pickled ginger out of colored fondant.

After the jump we've got a cake decorated to look like Tom Selleck, as well as another sculpted to replicate the Millennium Falcon (made by the folks at Charm City Cakes, so you know it has got to be good).

A wedding cake fit for historical stars

a wedding cake for Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross
Tonight, Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross are getting married. If that last sentence made you sit up a little straighter and blink with confusion at your computer screen, you're not the only one. You see, the actors who play Ben and Betsy all around Philadelphia are actually the ones getting married and it has become something of a public relations spectacle here in the City of Brotherly Love. So much so that their wedding has become a public event, at which the mayor is officiating and for which a gorgeous, 4th of July-themed cake has been baked.

The cake, conceived and baked by local sugar/flour/butter artist Zoe Lukas, is what interests us most around the Slashfood office. Lukas has created a three-tiered confection that is perfectly draped in white fondant and decorated with ribbon and handmade paper fireworks (what else could one want for a 4th of July wedding). There's an interview up on uwishunu, a local Philly blog, in which Lukas delves into the creation of the cake and how she designed its unique, yet traditional look. Check out the Whipped Bakeshop Flickr page for the rest of the cake pictures.

A fraking amazing Battlestar Galactica cake

a Battlestar Galatica cake
Last Saturday night, some folks in Philly got together to throw a Battlestar Galactica party. When it came to the dessert, they knew that they didn't need to look any further than local baker Zoë Lukas (she's the one who created those those really cool Robert Indiana cookies that I posted about a few months ago).

She didn't let them down, creating a work of art out of chocolate devil's food cake. It is filled with raspberry jam and ganache, iced with chocolate buttercream and ganache, decorated with chocolate ships and explosions, silver dragees and silver and gold space dust. Lukas is in the process of opening her own bakery in Philadelphia and I think I speak for the entire when I say, we can't wait.

A edible ode to Robert Indiana

love park cookie
In this country, there are versions of Robert Indiana's LOVE Scupture in New York, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Provo, Utah and Wichita, KS. Around the world, you can find it in Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Portugal, Singapore and Canada. Here in Philadelphia, we have two, one in JFK Plaza (also known as LOVE Park, home of many a contentious skate boarding confrontation) and another on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Because we have two, we tend to look at it as a symbol of our city, particular since Philly is also known as the City of Brotherly Love.

Local baker/artisan Zoe Lukas has taken the famous image, rendered it in royal frosting on the top of a very large cookie. Thus the LOVE cookie is born. I haven't seen one in person yet, but from the pictures it looks like a true replica as well as a tasty dessert. Yum!
