Taste Test: 3 Musketeers Mint with Dark Chocolate

I used to love candy -- anything sweet, for that matter -- and chocolate candy bars were something that I would eat daily. However, in recent years, I haven't been as obsessive about chocolate (I know! Someone is going to have my head for that!) I realize that chocolate now has health benefits, and no doubt, I much prefer the darker varieties of chocolate to milk chocolate, but maybe that's why it's not fun to eat anymore. The naughtiness of chocolate is gone.

For the last two weeks, I have been overdosing on chocolate. Having one candy bar a day to do a bunch of taste tests was some serious overdosage. I will talk about the rest through the week, but for this Sunday afternoon, let's dive into the newest addition to the Three Musketeers family: Three Musketeers Mint with Dark Chocolate.

Epicurious samples sugar-free chocolates

Operating purely from a health perspective, Epicurious set out to taste some sugar-free chocolates to see if there was one on the market that didn't "taste like chalk." In this case, they were taste testing the treats with a Halloween loving but candy-deprived diabetic, so the test was not conducted from a weight-loss or low-carb mindset . This is a solid indication that the tasters really were putting taste first, and not the nutrition label. The chocolates were grouped by brand:

  • Hershey's - Winner: Sugar Free York Peppermint Patties, Loser: No Sugar Hershey bars ("truly awful")
  • Guylian - Winner: Dark chocolate bar, Loser: Hazelnut bar (unless you're a big hazelnut fan)
  • Asher Chocolates - Winner: Espresso truffles and vanilla caramels, Loser: Peppermint patties (not minty enough)
  • Godiva - Winner: Milk and dark assortment, dark chocolate candy bars, Loser: None.
In general, the tasters felt that you got what you paid for when it came to sugar-free chocolates. The Godiva chocolates were the best of the bunch and were remarkably similar to "real" chcolates. Darker chocolates, which have less sugar even in regular bars, will transition more smoothly than milk chocolates. Combining the chocolates with other strong flavors, like hazelnut, coconut or mint, can cover up any minor flaws in the chocolate and will make even a poor-quality no-sugar chocolate acceptable most of the time.

Taste Test: Trader Joe's Chocolate Mint Creams

Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mint Creams tempted me from their plastic containers, stacked appealingly close to me as I stood in line with my other purchases at Trader Joe's over the weekend. After a moment of hesitation, I gave in a tossed a box into my cart. And I am so glad that I did. These little candies are about an inch in diameter and are slightly domed. They taste like a cross between a junior mint and a York peppermint patty, with a filling that is creamy, but with a little bit of texture to it. The difference between those other candies and these is that the TJs dark chocolate shell is much thicker, providing the perfect compliment to the filling and a noticeable chocolate flavor. They're really good when chilled and end up tasting like a minty, bite-sized ice cream treat, which makes them incredibly refreshing (not to mention that it keeps them from melting) on a hot day.

Principal becomes "human burger"



Yesterday, students at York, Pennsylvania's Locust Grove Elementary School doused their principal with hamburger toppings in an act of charity. A local supermarket chain offered to double the amount of money they normally donate to local schools whose principals did something "original and entertaining," according to the York Daily Record. Locust Grove principal Robert W. Shick (above) was one of five administrators chosen from hundreds of entrants. Shick sat on a hamburger bun as students covered him with all sorts of fixins, including lettuce, relish, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise (shiver). "It felt very good between my toes," Shick told the YDR.
