"wine glass" news and stories

For your pet who is an oenophile

Alice Wang Pet Plus Wine GlassesI'm not quite sure what to make of Alice Wang's set of two wine glasses. In the box, they look a little strange because one of them looks like it was taken out of the fire a little too soon. It's tilted! But it's tilted for a reason - so Fido can sip his wine, too.

Granted, I am not sure it's actually safe for a dog to drink wine, but the idea of the Pet Plus Wine Glasses is cute for a pet-parent and his or her pup to share in a drink together, lounging out on the veranda. Just pour yourself the Pinot, and fill his glass with water.

The Pet Plus Wine Glasses are available from designer Alice Wang's website.

Wine Porn: Foodography Update

Some super submissions to the latest round of foodography photography challenge over on flickr. I particularly liked this one from the Abstract Gourmet. Matt is the guy behind the blog - which you should go look at too - and has caught a get shot with his Canon EOS30D. Those highlights on the rim and on the wine certainly add much to the image. Not so much foodporn, more glass porn. Very professional.

The best glass to taste wines?

The fashion in wine glasses is for them to be varietal, which means that the shape of each glass is specifically designed to enhance the flavor and aroma of that type of wine. It also means that connoisseurs have to buy a lot more stemware if they want to have the best experience with their favorite wine. A new type of glass, the Zafferano Esperienze glass, promises to be the ultimate in wine tasting. These glasses are varietal and come in 15 different shapes. The rippling at the base of each glass is designed to allow the wine to develop its optimal flavor by giving it maximum exposure to the surface of the glass.

The glasses were recently recommended by David Rosengarten (who loved them) and mentioned in the New York Times, so perhaps there is more to their design than just hype. They are $29.99 for four and will be available at Macy's, followed by Bloomingdale's and Bed, Bath & Beyond, later this month.
