"Wilton" news and stories

James and the giant cupcake

Giant Cupcakes
Cupcakes are single-serving personal desserts that you don't have to share with anyone else - at least that used to be the case. Wilton has created a cake pan designed to look like a cupcake. The way it works is that there are two cake molds: one for the top of the cupcake and one for the base cake. James made two of these giant cupcakes on Halloween and they fed 30 people!

The "cupcakes" sure do look adorable, but I like my personal, little cupcake just for me - thank you very much. If we are going to call these cupcakes at all, we should definitely be clear that they are double D cups.

Should you want to try to make them, first buy the Wilton cupcake pan. Then, check out James for some great baking tips.

The mother of all cupcakes

For my birthday party this year, I made three varieties of cupcakes (vanilla bean, lemon and chocolate). For the topping, I whipped up three varieties of frosting (cream cheese, vanilla butter cream and chocolate). I laid it all out in one great, big frost-your-own, cupcake station, which was quite the hit with my friends and family. But, had I known about this giant cupcake cake mold back then, I would have been mightily torn about what direction to go with my birthday dessert (although I think that $27.95 plus shipping is a little steep for what would have probably been a single-time use). However, if I ever stumble across one of these suckers at a garage sale or thrift store, I wouldn't hesitate to snatch it up.

Gingerbread man pan

Gingerbread men are a bit of a hassle to bake. Mixing up the dough is not the problem and neither is decorating the cooled cookies or eating them. They annoying thing about the cookies is that the dough has to be chilled, rolled out, cut and rerolled before the cookies can even be baked. It is time consuming and, when you consider that you could have made at least a batch or two of chocolate chip cookies in the mean time, it doesn't always seem worth the effort. But there is no denying that the cookies are cute. Fortunately, Wilton makes a gingerbread man pan that can be used to bake little cakes, muffins, brownies and even mold rice crispy treats into gingerbread men. It is much faster than working with the cut-out cookies and you can still have fun decorating them. One additional bonus is that the cake pan gives you an easy alternative to cookies when the holidays tend to be cookie-heavy as far as desserts go.
