So much for a menu of blood oranges and garlic: The owners of a planned "Twilight"-themed eatery in Forks, Wash., say they're studiously avoiding vampire cuisine.

The logging town of Forks, as depicted in Stephenie Meyer's hugely popular series of teenage romances, is overrun with vampires. But, according to Annette Root, the real Forks has a bigger problem.

"It's very difficult to find something to eat in Forks after 8 o'clock," sighs Root, a "Twilight" gift shop owner who's opening the Lodge in Forks.

Tru Blood Cocktails

What do you do when you get a bottle of Tru Blood -- the real blood-orange soda inspired by the synthetic blood vampires like Bill Compton drink on HBO's "True Blood"?

If you're me, you head to a bar with a sinister name in an isolated part of town and see what a brilliant bartender can do.

Dutch Kills bartender Giuseppe Gonzalez happens to be a fan of the Southern Gothic tale and was downright delighted to play around with this new sweet soda, which has a faint, bitter caffeine aftertaste that goes well with bitters but can be problematic with other players on the liquor cabinet shelf.

Tom Colicchio Makes a Drink for Vampires

We were wondering what to serve for our weekly viewing party of that guilty little pleasure "True Blood." Chef Tom Colicchio has the answer.

Fresh from his Diet Coke ad, the Craft-y chef has done a campy viral video for the HBO vampire series, making a drink to satiate Colicchio's vampire pals while the "Top Chef" host dines out.

"I have a few friends that are vampires and I've had this issue," Colicchio tells the host of the fake show "The Perspective." We go out, and I'm sitting there through an appetizer, an entree and dessert, and they're just kind of nursing a Tru Blood [the blood substitute vampires drink on the show]. It's a little awkward."

Read on for the very non-Bon Temps recipe.

Midnight Snack: Hematogenka Vitamin

By now some readers of Midnight Snack have come to think of me as the food blogger who cried weird. But I'm pretty sure the product whose package you see here is one of the stranger things I've eaten at midnight or any other time. Sure It looks like a candy bar, but according to the incredibly tiny print on the back, it's actually a "Biologically Active Food Supplement <<Hematogenka Vitamin>>. The fact that it was "biologically active," came as a relief; the last few Russian food supplements I bought have been biologically inert. Actually that's a lie, I've never had a Russian food supplement before this one, and after tasting it, I don't think I'll be buying another one any time soon.

When I tore open the festive packaging, which featured an image of a mutant man-alligator, I saw five individually wrapped morsels. I unwrapped one of the dark brown chunks and popped it in my mouth. It had a slightly granular texture and supersweet taste that reminded me of my dear mother's oatmeal cookie dough before she added the oats. It all makes sense given that the bizarre bar's ingredients are: sugar, molasses, complete condensed milk with sugar, fat lecithin, salt, hemoglobin, mixture of vitamins (E-10 mg.,B11.4 mg., B6-2 mg., PP -18 mg., C-60mg.). Reading a little further I learned that "Hematogenka provides a reserve for feeding with iron." Against my better judgment I popped another chunk of the brown mystery bar into my mouth. Shortly thereafter I brushed my teeth and threw the rest of the nasty thing out.

When I read that my mystery bar contained hemoglobin, I began to think of it as a PowerBar for vampires who've awoken feeling peckish. However a quick web search revealed that such bizarre supplement-snacks are eaten by Russians. Has anyone out there ever heard of hemoglobin bars or had the pleasure of eating one?

Vampire Cupcakes ... that bleed!

Vampire CupcakesThis recipe is rather complex, since you're not just making the cupcake itself but also cherry filling and marshmallow topping, but the effect you get looks like it's worth it.

I wonder if there's another way to do this. Maybe a Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade way. Perhaps getting cupcakes from the store and putting white frosting on them and then putting the holes on top with the red dripping from the holes. Nah, just go ahead and make them at the link above. The recipe makes 18 cupcakes, which is a good amount for a party or for your family.

And as a bonus, when you bite into them it looks even more bloody inside!
