Shrinking sizes and rising prices

close up of a Hershey bar package
Over the last few months, the intrepid editors over at Consumerist have done an outstanding job of tracking the trend of smaller sizes for the same price. They call it the Grocery Shrink Ray and they've seen it hit everything from coffee, to peanut butter to yogurt (it also strikes non-edible products such as toothpaste and contact lens solution).

One of the debates that occurs around this topic of shrinking package sizes is whether it would be more honest for companies to simply raise the prices on their products instead of charging the same for a smaller amount. In the face of rising costs, Turkey Hill Dairy has decided to succumb to the dreaded shrinking size trend for their ice cream packages, as prices for ice cream's have risen dramatically in recent days. They announced this size reduction with a heart-felt letter penned by company President, Quintin Frey that was posted on their blog.

On the other side of the coin is Hershey's, who announced recently a price hike of 10-11% across their entire product line. This comes on the heels of a 13% increase last February.

These days, rising prices are an inevitability. Do you prefer to experience it through higher prices or lesser amounts for the same price?

Insulated bowl keeps your ice cream cool

Zak! Designs insulated ice cream bowlMost of the time when I eat ice cream, I eat it straight out of the container with an iced tea spoon. This habit totally wigged my first boyfriend out and he always insisted that I scoop what I wanted out of the carton and into a bowl. After he moved out, I reverted to my old habits, cozily wrapping a folded kitchen towel around the container as an insulating handle. I come by this particular tendency honestly, as that's just the way we always did it in my house while I was growing. It's akin to the how my mom's family used to eat cheesecake when she was growing up. Her mom would plunk a frozen cake down on the kitchen table and everyone would sit around it with forks, picking at the defrosting edges.

However times are changing. I need to worry about things like portion control. One thing might make using a bowl for my ice cream a little more appealing is this specially designed, insulated ice cream bowl from Zak! Designs. Brightly colored for maximum allure, it keeps your dessert cold while protecting your hands from getting chilly.

Get your ice cream delivered

Package printed with a Turkey Hill labelHave you ever lived in a place and gotten attached to a particular food product that is made in that region? And then you move away and discover that you can't get that product in your new locale? It leaves a void in your life (I have a Toby's tofu pate shaped-hole in my own existence).

For those of you out there who once lived in the Northeast and developed a taste for Turkey Hill ice cream, you can now fill that void for just $86 (that's actually more than I would want to pay for four cartons of ice cream, but to each their own). Sometimes a chance to experience just the right flavor sensation is worth just about any price.

Turkey Hill's all-ice cream blog

We're not planning to have an ice cream theme day, not until it gets a little closer to summer and warmer weather, but the fact that it's cold out doesn't mean that we're not going to get an ice cream fix between now and then. And Turkey Hill's Ice Cream Journal might just be the way to do that without giving us brain-freeze. The all-ice cream blog is the first one that I've seen out there and although there are a number of other food-specific blogs, I'm not sure that I could have guessed that there was so much to say about ice cream. Only a few posts are up on the brand new blog, but their post about spotting a happy face in the top of the ice cream container is pretty interesting (and it's only a matter of time before someone finds some sort of religious icon). Drop in a leave a comment for them, since they're giving away a prize each month to a random commenter. It sounds like bribery, but as long as ice cream is involved, we're willing to look the other way.

Ice creams for Tastykake Fans

I am a big fan of Tastykakes, but they are in limited supply here in California, so I tend to pick up an extra box or two when I travel back to the Philadelphia area and tuck them into my freezer for safekeeping when I get home. One of the newest products available to Tastykakes fans is Tastykake ice cream. Made with Turkey Hill Ice Cream, there are three decadent flavors to choose from. The Peanut Butter Kandy Kake flavor has vanilla ice cream with cake pieces, chocolate chips and swirls of peanut putter and fudge. The Oatmeal Raisin Bar is cinnamon ice cream with pieces of Tastykake Oatmeal Raisin Bars and plump, juicy raisins. The newest flavor offered, a limited edition, is Chocolate Cupcake, which has milk chocolate ice cream with chocolate cupcake pieces and a chocolate icing swirl. Frosting in ice cream? Now that sounds like the recipe for a sugar rush!

Unfortunately, I don't think that the ice cream is doing to hold up as well as the snack cakes do in my suitcase. I guess I'll have to wait to try these for myself, but if anyone has had them, let us know what they taste like in the comments - they all sound delicious!
