Happy National Parfait Day!

Happy National Parfait Day!

Although I'm not proud to admit my initial exposure to any food was at a fast-food chain, my first memory of the parfait involves those creamy -- though perhaps closer to pasty than luscious -- plastic-cupped "Little Bucket Parfaits" at the Colonel's KFC. My childhood self was delighted by the layered varieties, gleeful with the prospect of crumbled cookies awaiting at the bottom. (It runs in the family: My father is so notorious for his love for the British trifle -- which is differentiated by its inclusion of ladyfingers -- that, at my sister's wedding in the British countryside, her husband's mother presented my father with a bowl of it as an edible good-natured gesture.)

And, given my affinity for the elegant pudding, I was tantalized by Flickr user Dessert First's elegant Vanilla Bean and Lemon Verbena Parfait with Summer Raspberries. Check out their recipe or peruse our selection for a treat to celebrate today!

Quick and Easy Berry Trifle - Foodie Flicks

If there's one thing that can beat all the baking restrictions the summer imposes, it's a deliciously layered trifle. There's no baking, no freezing and it only takes a fraction of the time a dessert cooked in the oven requires.

This video comes to us from Simple Foodie, which revels in quick and easy ways to satiate the appetite. If you're tight on time, simply buy a pound cake and whipped cream from the store and macerate the seasonal berries before layering the trifle. (If you have a touch more time and are feeling motivated, turn a perfectly fine dessert into a real winner by dolloping on some homemade whipped cream, because let's face it -- Cool Whip just isn't the same thing).

What's your favorite trifle combo?

Heavenly Fruit Trifle

A beautifully arranged fruit trifle
My best friend from college sent a recipe around to a group of us recently that I think is just too good not to share. It is a slightly modern taken on a classic trifle (because they didn't have Cool Whip when trifles were first being constructed), that retains appealing traces of a 1950's ladies' luncheon. I can just imagine it being spooned out into footed glass bowls and garnished with a sprig of mint. It's also the type of dessert that if you ate the whole thing by yourself, you wouldn't need to worry, as it's mostly fruit, yogurt and air.

Heavenly (enter fruit here) Trifle
1 angel food cake
2 containers of raspberry yogurt (6 or 8 oz each - can use light version)
8 oz. container of Cool Whip* (fat free if you want)
6 oz. can of sliced peaches in juice (not heavy syrup)
sliced fruit - I often use strawberries and kiwis in the middle and then decorate with strawberries, kiwi, peaches and/or blueberries on top

The rest of the instructions are after the jump.

*Most of the time I would be disdainful of Cool Whip, as I can be something of a food snob, but somehow, it just seems right in this recipe.

Exegetical conceit and trifle

trifle

Any idea what this is about? I read the word "trifle" and thought, "Oh, wow. Trifle."

Then I read the bit about "exegetical conceit" which I don't actually have a clue about. It seems to be a book review (it is on flickr)  and nothing at all to do with trifle. Which is a shame as I am rather partial to a trifle. I even blogged about it for the St Georges Day blogevent and entered a picture in a round of Does My Blog Look Good In This. I didn't win. But what exactly does trifle have to do with building scalable websites and what exactly does " a four page analogy between data layers and the English dessert known as "Trifle" actually do, or mean?

Scalable websites or trifle? Ummm, trifle please...
