What's On Tap, Albuquerque - Two Fools Tavern

A weekly look at the draft selection in beer-friendly bars across the country.

Finding two English-speaking cities more different than Dublin and Albuquerque, N.M., would be a pretty tough task. So some four years ago, when Two Fools Tavern opened its doors proclaiming to be "Albuquerque's only authentic Irish Pub," one can assume it was an ambitious undertaking.

"There was a need for it," says Russell Reid, general manager of Two Fools Tavern, explaining why they tried to bring a touch of Emerald Isle to the American Southwest. The gamble (if you can call opening an Irish pub a "gamble") has paid off: "We've been very successful."

Part of that success comes from having a solid beer selection, including nineteen draft lines. "We have Irish and English beers that are staples of what you'd need in a pub and then have a rounded balance."

Included in that balance are a number of American craft products. Via Full Sail, the bar has two exclusive Two Fools selections: a pale ale and a house cider. They're also proud to provide the beers in Sierra Nevada's Imperial series on tap, as well as other unique brews from around the country (particularly Colorado).

Reid knows his customers appreciate the additional selections: "Albuquerque is a great beer market. A lot of people don't realize that. It's much more of a beer town than other spirits." Still, despite continuing to evolve the draft list, Two Fools always keeps the Irish pub standbys. As Reid reminds us, "We're the largest seller of Guinness in the state."

Check out the current draft list at Two Fools Tavern after the jump.

What's On Tap, Seattle - Über Tavern

A weekly look at the draft selection in beer-friendly bars nationwide.

Even at the best beer bars, boredom can occasionally set in. Sometimes the draft list just doesn't feature brews that fit the day's mood. Or maybe a keg of your favorite suds just got kicked.

Well, world-class beer bars, like Seattle's Über Tavern, are always looking to remedy such afflictions. Smack dab on the front of their website, patrons can check out what's recently been added as well as an extensive selection of "kegs in the cellar" featuring what's about to come. "We update every time there needs to be a change," said manager Charlie Wedbee. "It works out to about four times a week."

Über's been doing this "forever," says Wedbee (in real time, about three years). They seem to have their act together, so don't worry about trekking all the way to this tavern just to find a slew of unfamiliar taps. It'd be swell if similar craft concoction-proffering pubs could offer this sort of full disclosure about what brews to expect upon arrival.

Which of your favorite watering holes are web-savvy with their draft lists? Let us know in the comments! After the jump, Über's Monday draft list.

Phila. Weekly Top 50 bars

Between Marisa and I, we pretty much have the Philly phood food scene covered. Especially when it comes to Beer Week.

But there's one not-so-subtle difference: Marisa reviews the classy beer critic's news. And me? Well...I stick to what I know. Dive bars and cheap local beer, baby (I'm not sure if I'm proud or ashamed of this fact. Maybe a little of both).

And there's more dive bars and cheap local beer in this week's alt-weekly than one could ever ask for. Now, the alt-weekly staff certainly aren't the most highly regarded reviewers of food and drink, but they do know their fine hole-in-the-wall pubs and classic dingy taverns when they seem 'em. Ask them for the best spot to get a PBR and a shot of Jack, and they'd never steer you wrong. (For the record, it's Bob & Barbara's).

There's a grainy little video of the #1 choice, Grace Tavern. But even if you don't live in Philly, you'll appreciate it for its old-timey tavern feel and the little quirks that make it unique.

Hey Philly readers: which ones from the list do you frequent? And which bars did the paper mistakenly leave off the list?

Oh, and for the record? I've been to exactly half of them. Bring it on, Marisa!

Tip of the Day

The turkey turned out perfectly, but the gravy's a different story. Avoid botching the one recipe that guests pour over their entire Thanksgiving plates with these quick fixes.
