Turkey Meatball Sub - Feast Your Eyes

turkey meatball sub
Here's one more glimpse of some tasty Superbowl snacks (if you didn't get enough last night at whatever viewing party you attending). These Open-Face Turkey Meatball Subs were made by Maggie and Shiv of the food blog Pithy and Cleaver (I just recently discovered their site and it's one of my new must-reads) and I wish they had been part of my Superbowl menu (I had some delicious soup, but it wasn't the same as a good meatball sub).

Thanks Maggie!

Last-Minute Super Bowl Recipes From Celebrity Chefs

Scrambling for ideas for your Super Bowl party? Check out Cookstr's Top 10 Winning Super Bowl Recipes from some of America and Great Britain's favorite celebrity chefs. There's a Caribbean-influenced sweet and spicy wing recipe, made in a slow cooker, a crowd-pleasing bacon and chipotle truck stop chili, homemade crispy tortillas with guacamole from Naked Chef Jamie Oliver, roasted almonds with Southwestern spices, classic nachos, spicy meatballs whose leftovers can double as dinner Monday night, Indian-inspired chicken samosas with veggie yogurt dip, a garlicky take on classic spinach dip, a healthy chopped salad with feta and chickpeas, and Nigella Lawson's almost no-cook peanut butter squares. If you don't get a chance to make these before the big game, I'm pretty sure they'll taste just as good during March Madness.

Iron City is Steeler Beer

Iron City Steeler BeerNot every football team has a (semi-) official beer, but the Steelers certainly do: Iron City. Brewed in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Iron City has long paid homage to the hometown team, even designing a series of beer cans in their honor back in the late 70's days of the famed "Steel Curtain" defense, as well as a Jerome Bettis can a few years back.

Despite the fact that Iron City's roots go back over 100 years, 'tis no microbrew. No, think more along the lines of a Pabst or Genesee: A blue-collar beer that gets the job done. Rather like the team it shares a nickname with. As such, Iron City always feels a bit of a sales bump whenever the Steelers hit the Super Bowl. The brewers are especially hopeful this year, as many of the workers in their Pittsburgh plant have been temporarily laid off. It's apparently just until some kind of trouble with the manufacturing line can be solved. Once it is, everyone will be back.

We certainly hope so: There was a time when the Steelers had two beers, back when Rolling Rock was brewed in Latrobe, a town northwest of Pittsburgh where the Steelers had their training camp. The brewery was bought by Anheiser-Busch, who then closed it and moved all operations to New Jersey, thus severing all ties with all things Pittsburgh. Given that I have family in Latrobe, I myself haven't let a drop of the stuff pass my lips since the sale. So, if you want to honor the Steelers on Super Bowl Sunday, go for the Iron City, not the Rolling Rock.

More Super Bowl Treats at Epicurious

steak sandwich
Planning your Super Bowl party? Epicurious has a whole package of game day ideas, from recipe slideshows to a Q&A with Super Bowl chef Ron Krivosik. There are even special menus tailored team allegiances - a Southwestern-inspired buffet of margaritas, enchiladas, chile con carne, corn pudding, cactus and apple salad, and chocolate chimichangas for the Arizona Cardinals, and a hearty, Polish-flavored spread of lager, kielbasa, pierogies, creamy coleslaw, french fries, and banana split pie for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There's also not one, but seven different chicken wing recipes - I'm keen to try the sticky sesame version. Plus, there's a tailgate recipe contest and a guide to gear (helmet snack trays or a football-shaped grill, anyone?).

What are you planning on serving for the Super Bowl this Sunday? Do you have any bowl traditions?

Congratulations, New York Giants! Now here's your donut.

Wow.

You best believe I was watching the Super Bowl all afternoon (with a few flips back and forth from AnimalPlanet to catch the Puppy Bowl) and though I was supporting the Patriots here all week in our very own Slashfood Bowl, it's the New York Giants who won today!

And since the Giants have won Super Bowl XLII, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino lost his bet with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Mayor Menino will send a package of Boston foods to New York: New England Clam Chowder, Dunkin' Donuts coffee, Boston cream pies, chicken sausages and Brigham's ice cream. The food will be donated to local food charities in New York.

Congratulations, New York, and great job, Giants!
