"steamed milk" news and stories

Cinnamon Dolce back at Starbucks!

The Cinnamon Dolce Latte is back on Starbucks menu boards as of a few days ago, although a friendly store or two may have started making the popular drinks just before the New Year if you were lucky. Cinnamon Dolce is typically an indulgent drink, made with espresso, steamed milk and a sweet syrup flavored with cinnamon, butter and brown sugar. The standard comes topped with whipped cream and cinnamon sprinkles, as well. But due to the drink's popularity and the increasingly health-conscious customer base, Starbucks has introduced a sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce syrup this year as an alternative to the standard. It has the same flavors, but zero calories. Made with nonfat milk (and no whipped cream), a tall sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce Latte has only 90 calories, an impressive reduction from a tall-sized regular CDL made with whipped cream and whole milk, which has 340 calories (260 without the whipped cream).

An easy way to make latte art

Instead of fussing with steamed milk and trying to perfect the very difficult skill of making good latte art, which is very tricky to practice unless you have access to a good espresso machine and work in a coffee shop or drink a lot of coffee, a good way to decorate your drinks is with a stencil. Aerolatte sells a Cappuccino Art Set. The art set comes with a collection of stencils that can be placed on top of your drink and dusted with cocoa powder or cinnamon using a fine duster, similar to the type used for sprinkling powdered sugar. The six stencils are made of sturdy plastic, are dishwasher safe and come with a small storage tin. There is only one downside and that is the fact that you are limited to the designs that are provided. As elegant as the premade stencils are, if you want to make your own, you can use the exact same technique (perhaps even the same stencils) that we used for making cupcake stencils a few weeks ago.

Starbucks Green Tea Latte

Starbucks is releasing their new Green Tea Latte in the US today. The green tea lattes are already available at many other Starbucks locations throughout the world. Unlike their Green Tea Frappuccino from last summer, which was made with a premixed base, the tea latte is built just like a regular latte - with freshly steamed milk. They are flavored with matcha, which is powdered green tea, a a splash of melon-flavored syrup. If you like the flavor of the green tea and don't want to cover it up with the melon flavor, take Hungry Girl's advice and ask for your latte to be made with half the amount of syrup. Alternatively, try vanilla syrup instead of the melon altogether.

Just please don't ask the baristas to add a shot of espresso to your tea drink. I know that I have seen a lot of people do it, but it's just not right.

Breakfast at Starbucks?

starbucks and kellogg'sStarbucks Gossip mentioned a rumor that Starbucks will be partnering with Kellogg's to introduce a line of granola cereals. The cereal will be packaged in individual portion cups, so steamed milk can be added easily for a convenient, quick breakfast.

This seems like a great idea because so many people start their day at Starbucks. Along with a latte, people order breakfast of a muffin, scone or other pastry virtually every morning. The granola - which will most likely be a low-fat variety - will probably have more to offer nutritionally than the jumbo sized chocolate scones Starbucks serves. At the very least, the whole oats in the granola will add an extra serving of fiber to the daily diet. Offering both steamed and cold milk to top the granola gives the cereal the versatility to be appealing all year long.
