Free Pastry Day at Starbucks

Photo: Starbucks

As if you needed another reason to make a morning pit stop at Starbucks, tomorrow is Free Pastry Day. You purchase one handcrafted, brewed or iced-coffee beverage, and one of their croissants, muffins, bagels, doughnuts or other pastries is yours for the taking until 10:30AM.

Now that Starbucks prominently displays nutrition facts alongside those icing-drizzled treats (I'm talking about you, 490-calorie pumpkin scone), you might need to resolve ahead of time to settle for one of their less dangerous options. We suggest the fiber-rich apple bran muffin (hello, crumb topping) or a protein-packed multigrain bagel. Or, heck, who cares --it's free pastry day-- go all out.

This offer isn't available at Barnes & Noble café locations. And Free Pastry Day (or really, free pastry morning) will only last until the pastries are gone, so hit your snooze button with caution. Don't forget to print or show this coupon to your barrista to redeem the offer.

Starbucks revamps nutrition guide

For the longest time, the nutritional information available on the Starbucks website has only covered some of the most popular pastries, in addition to covering their entire drink menu. The problem with this is that many of the pastries are different from region to region. For example, Starbucks in Northern California are more likely to have Organic Banana Berry Muffins than in Southern California, and Starbucks in New York carry Black and White Cookies. It was possibly to obtain the information by calling their customer service center, but though it was a toll-free number, it often seemed like a lot of effort to find out the number of calories in a muffin. Recently, though, Starbucks revamped their on-site nutritional information. Now, you can input the zip code o the Starbucks you’re headed to and it will give you the nutritional information for all the pastries that they offer there. This will be great for anyone following a particular diet or simply wanting to watch what he or she eats, though I’m sure that some Starbucks patrons will probably happier not to know the fat content of their "low fat" Apricot Blueberry Muffin - which does not actually meet the federal guidelines for a  "low fat" item (under 3 grams of fat per serving), as Starbucks now shows that the muffin has 7 grams of fat.

Breakfast at Starbucks?

starbucks and kellogg'sStarbucks Gossip mentioned a rumor that Starbucks will be partnering with Kellogg's to introduce a line of granola cereals. The cereal will be packaged in individual portion cups, so steamed milk can be added easily for a convenient, quick breakfast.

This seems like a great idea because so many people start their day at Starbucks. Along with a latte, people order breakfast of a muffin, scone or other pastry virtually every morning. The granola - which will most likely be a low-fat variety - will probably have more to offer nutritionally than the jumbo sized chocolate scones Starbucks serves. At the very least, the whole oats in the granola will add an extra serving of fiber to the daily diet. Offering both steamed and cold milk to top the granola gives the cereal the versatility to be appealing all year long.
