Tarantulas Stretch the Definition of "Dinner" in Cambodia

The "bizarre food" craze shows no signs of abating. Spurred on by television personalities and tell-all books, intrepid eaters continue to search the globe for the strangest -- and most off-putting -- edibles they can get their hands on. Which explains the skyrocketing popularity of the latest extreme tourist activity in Cambodia: hunting and eating tarantulas.

The hairy spiders are considered a delicacy in Kampong Cham Town and Sukon, and locals have begun offering visitors the chance to capture their own. The hunting party visits forests and cashew plantations to find the spiders, catching the nocturnal creatures while they're sleeping by poking sticks into their holes.

And then, cue the dinner bell. Deep frying the spiders is a popular technique -- they're served with salt and garlic. Prefer a drink? No worries. You can get your tarantula mixed into a rice wine and jack fruit cocktail.

Halloween Cheese Pizza

Halloween pizzaI'll usually think of any excuse to eat pizza. New episode of my favorite TV show is on tonight? I'll order a pizza! Won $50? Order a pizza! Arbor Day? Pizza time!

So Halloween is just a perfect a night as any other to have some pizza. This one from Betty Crocker you make yourself. The giant slab of cheese in spider-shapes placed on top of each slice gives it that Halloween look. Maybe you can add some black olives so it really looks Halloweeny.*

Note: you'll need Halloween cookie cutters for this recipe, unless you're really handy with a knife.

*Halloweeny?

Creepy crawly Halloween cakes

Feeling crafty this Halloween? Not Martha came up with some really creepy creations that are perfect for a Halloween party. The little cakes use primarily ready-made ingredients, which not only take the pressure off a busy cook who already has more important dishes in the oven, but adds another level of scariness for those of you who are not inclined to consume packaged snack cakes on a regular basis. The bodies of the cake critters are all based on Twinkies, Glo Balls and Ding Dongs and can easily be made with other, similar cakes. The slightly moist surface allows colored sugar and sprinkles to stick readily if you want to change the color of the cake or add a design to the body. The legs are all made with Pocky and used a brilliant method of construction. Each Pocky was cut in two and then the two pieces were fused back together, at the appropriate angle, with chocolate. Matching the color/texture of the Pocky to that of the cakes will give you the most "realistic" outcome, but if your spiders end up with pink legs, you'll have fun putting them together anyway.
