Some Like It Hot: 50 Drinks to Warm Your Spirits, Cookbook of the Day

Here in Southern California, the days are still quite warm, but the nights are certainly getting chilly and there are few things that will warm you up - whether it is 50F or -5F - like a piping hot drink. Some Like It Hot: 50 Drinks to Warm Your Spirits is a book of nothing but drinks that will keep you feeling good no matter what the weather is like. It has recipes for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and the selections range from classics like Hot Buttered Rum and Eggnog, to Swedish Glogg and sleep-inducing Malted Milk. Since it's not quite time for snowy weather, it's great that the book includes a whole section on fall drinks. They really embrace the spirit -and flavors - of autumn. The fall drinks include Pumpkin Portion No. 9, S'more Meltaways and Witches Brew, which sounds like a must for Halloween.

With only 50 recipes, this book isn't a long one, but the pictures will get you craving the drinks and you might just find yourself whipping up a drink or two after dinner, rather than going for a full dessert.

Some Like It Hot, Cookbook of the Day

Hot food may not be the first thing that springs to mind in hot weather, but believe it or not, sweating will cool you off faster than you might think. Some Like It Hot: Spicy Favorites from the World's Hot Zones serves up some of the spiciest foods in the world, all in one cookbook. Author Clifford Wright provides lots of information on the origin and uses of various chiles and spices in the book. The recipes range from the familiar, like Enchiladas Verdes, to the more exotic, with recipes from countries like Bolivia and Africa, where the cuisine is less familiar to most diners. The recipes also do cover a range on the spicy scale, so those with slightly more sensitive palates can work their way up to the more fiery dishes.

The recipes are organized by type of dish and include salads, sauces, seafood, meats, vegetables and - most intriguingly - eggs, which are not often made into their own category. Check out the recipe for Indian Chile Eggs before trying any of the others.

And remember to drink plenty of water (or the other cooling drinks Wright provides), too.
