Happy Ice Cream Soda Day!

Today is National Ice Cream Soda Day. Celebrate by eating a broccoli quiche!

OK, just kidding. What you have to do is celebrate by having an ice cream soda. Here are recipes for an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Soda and a Coffee Ice Cream Soda over at RecipeZaar. Here's a Strawberry Ice Cream Soda recipe from SouthernFood.about.com. And cooking.com has a recipe for a Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream Soda.

If you'r really into celebrating the day, you can send ice cream soda e-cards and learn about the history of soda fountains.

Make your own Mentos Geyser and win!

Mentos may once have been known as "the freshmaker," but we now know them best for the reaction that occurs when they are submerged in Coke. To cash in on their newfound glory, Mentos has created the Mentos Geyser contest, where entrants will compete to see whose homemade geyser reigns supreme. The videos must be no longer than 2 minutes and have to feature a regular Mentos (not sugar free) being dropped into "a plastic bottle of a carbonated beverage of any brand." There is a video tool kit available to contestants, which contains the Mentos logo, jingle and other graphics that might be useful. Entries must be submitted to YouTube by September 30th, 2006.

Prizes include up to 1000 iTunes downloads, a year's supply of Mentos (320 rolls) and various Mentos merchandise. Not to mention that everyone will have the chance to watch people making soda fountains of their own.

May the best geyser win!

Soda fountain drinks in soda fountain glasses

It's hard not to love a root beer float and even harder when it comes in an old fashioned soda fountain glass. These pastel-colored glasses will have you seeing the world through rose colored glasses as you sip a delicious, refreshing, old-fashioned treat in the comfort of your own home. A great way to show these off is to invite a few friends over and set up a grown-up ice cream sundae bar that will let you relive your childhood. The designer also offers banana split boats and appetizer plates in the same collection.

In case it's been a while since you had one, to make a root beer float all you need to do is scoop some of your favorite vanilla ice cream into a large glass and, carefully, pour over a can of root beer. If you pour down the side of the glass, instead of directly on top of the ice cream, you'll be able to reduce the amount of foam you create slightly. Drink it through a straw, but don't forget to keep a long-handled spoon nearby to scoop out all the ice cream!

Dr Pepper Berries and Cream

Dr. Pepper has been planning to add other flavors of soda to its Soda Fountain line since the release of it's Diet and Regular Cherry Vanilla Dr. Peppers in 2004. This month marks the first release of its new flavor: Dr. Pepper Berries and Cream . The new flavors we wildly successful during test marketing and their rollout will continue through June, at which time they should be in stores nationally. Several packs of the new sodas are already for sale on eBay. The official launch started when the company released several  in Plano, Texas, where the headquarters of Cadbury Schweppes, the company behind Dr. Pepper, is located.

Tip of the Day

Expand your grill repertoire by incorporating grilled items into tasty summer soups.
