Birthplaces of fast food

the very first KFCJust about anywhere you go in the world, you can find a McDonald's. Burger King, Wendy's, KFC and Starbucks also blanket the country from coast to coast. It's once of the dubious mysteries of life that you can get the same thing to eat whether you're in Portland, Maine or Portland, OR. We take it for granted that these foods are always available. But all those chains had to start out someplace, with a single storefront and a little ambition.

The folks over at Walletpop have created a slideshow that documents the first location for many of your favorite food chains. Did you know that the first Dairy Queen was in Joliet, Ill? It opened in 1938 and by 1950 it had 1,446 locations nationwide. Bob Evans expanded a little more slowly, starting with a single location in 1948. Today they have 600 restaurants across 18 states. Want to know more about your favorite chain? Go see the slide show!

Food-themed tee-shirts for hungry dressers

powered by tofu teeshirt
Most of the people who know me in real life are quite aware of the fact that I have a very boring wardrobe. Having been a grad student for the last year and a half, I've settled into a comfy pattern of jeans, a black top and Dansko clogs. Just about every day. It stuns people when I whip out a little color or accessorize this uniform with a necklace or scarf.

However, I do believe it's time to start sprucing things up and I'm leaning in the direction of a few of these fun food-themed tee-shirts that the folks over at Yumsugar compiled into a slideshow. They've got shirts from Threadless, Johnny Cupcakes and more (and they've even tracked down a few that are on sale!).

Famous chefs and their last meals

Fergus Henderson holding a pig's headTime magazine has a VERY cool slideshow up right now of famous chefs discussing the foods they'd like to eat as their last meals. Daniel Boulud would like to have whatever Alain Ducasse wanted to prepare for him. Mario Batali would like to go out in style with at least eight courses of Italian food. And Gary Danko would like something akin to a Greek or Roman banquet. All the photos and interviews are from the new book, My Last Supper, by Melanie Dunea.

Details compares food stars and porn stars

The folks over at Details magazine have assembled a slideshow entitled "Orgasm or Excellent Marinara?" Each frame features a cropped photo of different person with a rather suggestive expression. Advancing to the next frame reveals whether or not that person is a Food Network host or a "porn star." The first frame of the show is included here, and the glasses are a bit of a giveaway. There are about 15 different faces in all. Bear in mind that while this is pretty funny, seeing people like George Duran (Ham on the Street) and Paula Deen in this ecstatic context can be a little strange. The real porn star faces are kind of unsettling as well. This might be NSFW. If you'd like a slightly more academic approach to pornography and the Food Network, there's this.
