Sometimes, you really just want to eat whatever's placed in front of you. Other times, you just want to look at it, amused and delighted by nature's more whimsical side.
Such is the case with this bowl of carambolas, commonly -- and aptly -- known as starfruit. Immortalized by Kitty LaRoux in the Slashfood Flickr pool, they could be used as a centerpiece or placed strategically on a mantelpiece or coffee table. Taste, obviously, is important, but if you caught a bowl of shooting stars, wouldn't you want to just sit back and admire them for a little while, too?

So Fourth of July has come and gone again. Lest you already be feeling nostalgic, here's one last photo to make you feel a bit misty. Grilled and photographed by marilyn819 at Flickr, these fat brats, with their artful tan lines, are for many people the sight and smell of the Fourth, as well as the approximately two remaining months of summer. They're a reminder to go out and buy some sunscreen and lighter fluid, drop a lit match through the grates and wait attentively for dinner to be ready, as yet another summer afternoon disappears into the realm of lightly charred memory.
During the summer, meat gets all of the glory on the grill, but this photo, taken by Another Pint Please... at the Slashfood Flickr pool, makes a convincing case for the boundless charms of grilled corn. Few things match more beautifully with golden kernels and char marks -- slathered, of course, with a generous helping of rapidly melting butter.
Zucchini and corn quesadillas. Otherwise known as summer tucked into a couple of tortillas.
Created and snapped by Flickr's Ezra Pound Cake, they're a buoyant and appetizing reminder that making the most of seasonable vegetables need not be a fancy, expensive or time-consuming affair. Though its components are jewel-hued, the only lavishness to be found here is in the flavors -- where it belongs.
Father's Day, as greeting companies won't fail to remind us repeatedly over the upcoming week, is just around the corner. And these babies look like a perfect way to celebrate. Made and photographed by Bakerella at Flickr (she's also got her own blog), they're burgers and fries prepared without the aid of beef or potatoes. Instead, the burgers are actually an ingenious combination of brownies, cupcakes and frosting, and the fries are sugar cookies. Forget necessity: Daddy, it appears, is the mother of invention.
Ah, Friday. At long last. This calls for a celebration, and, of course, a celebration isn't a celebration without a cake. Preferably one that looks like this one, which was baked, frosted, sprinkled with lovely colors and then photographed by rachel is coconut&lime. Plucked from the Flickr Slashfood pool, it's the kind of cake that makes you feel like throwing a birthday party, even if your birthday isn't until next May. It's got that luscious, thick chocolate icing that's synonymous with the optimism of childhood, while the sprinkles could make even a full ashtray look appealing. It's a cake that could inspire even a non-baker to bake (or at least open a box of cake mix). It's a cake that could cure seasonal affects disorder. It's a cake, in other words, that's worthy of a celebration of its own, regardless of the day of the week.
Halloween is one of those holidays that just begs for cupcakes. Between class parties, office treat tables and seasonal bake sales, there's no better time to put on your cake decorating hat and think creatively. The Slashfood Flickr pool has an amazing assortment of talented artists who have directed their abilities towards the pursuit of the perfect spooky, scary, haunted cupcake.
I've searched through the pool and put together an gallery featuring the best of the Halloween cupcakes added to the pool so far this year (big thanks to all of you who've added your pictures). If you made some Halloween-themed cupcakes (or for that matter, any fun-holiday themed treats) make sure to add them to the pool, as I'd love to see them.
It is pumpkin time! I've got a couple of edible beauties positioned around my apartment at the moment, looking pretty until I find the time to chop them up, roast them and whirl them down into some versatile puree. If you've got a similar "problem," consider making these Pumpkin Pecan Chocolate Chunk cookies. While they often say that less is more, I think when it comes to these cookies, more is just more.
Thanks Bakerella, for adding these yummy treats to the Slashfood Flickr pool.
Recently, Joy the Baker headed out on a doughnut quest, searching for the best doughnut in the greater Los Angeles area. She ate the greater part of nine doughnuts at three locations and discovered that one should not eat that many doughnuts in a single morning. She ranked the sprinkle doughnut you see above as one of the best.
Thanks Joy, for adding this tasty pic to the Slashfood pool.
Oh summer, what will we do when you're over? We certainly won't be making gorgeous salads like the one you see above. There's truly nothing better than the combination of fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes and roughly torn basil leaves and this is a lovely interpretation of the classic.
Thanks to Lindsay, for adding this tasty pic to the Slashfood pool.
Judging from Mike's results, it looks like this recipe/technique is a true winner. He served his with a side of vanilla ice cream and says that it was very much like an inside out banana split. He's got plans for fancying it up the next time around, using better chocolate and topping it with a sprinkle of toasted nuts. The picture above is the before shot, click here to see the banana after it's been on the grill for a while.
