Wake up to a skull and crossbones

toaster skullWe seem to have an odd fascination with toast here at Slashfood, not the browned bread itself, but how people make the somewhat mundane morning meal into something fun. I just came across the Totenkopf Toaster, which imprints a skull and crossbones onto your toast! Sure sure, skulls were a big thing last season in fashion, showing up on everything from rhinestone-bedecked accessories to imprinted on scarves, but that's fashion. And that was also last season. Skulls on food? It kind of makes me think of....poison.

The toaster is available from a German site, so I'm not exactly sure what all the specs are, but at the very least, I do know it costs 32.95EUR.

Spooky sweets from Moonstruck

Moonstruck Chocolate Co. usually focuses on making some of the most beautiful confections that you're likely to see, with creation designs and precision artistry, but for Halloween, they do something a little different. In the spirit of the season, some of their seasonal offerings look more scary than sophisticated, which we love because it seems a little more appropriate for the holiday. The Halloween Horror Pizza is milk chocolate topped with a chocolate truffle eyeball and some gummy goodies that you wouldn't expect to find on any pizza. The Ivory Skull and Wormy Jack are both filled with gummy candies to give anyone who bites into the chocolate a Halloween trick, as well as a treat.

If you can't make up your mind as to which one you want, you can order a combo pack that contains one of each.

Day of the Dead chocolate skulls

Would you normally use the word "cute" to describe a skull? Aside from "delicious", that is the only adjective that seems to apply to these Day of the Dead chocolate skulls from Vosges Chocolate. The skulls are made from white, milk and dark chocolate and have a variety of flavor combinations inspired by el Día de los Muertos. The skulls' black eyes are made with edible glitter, which gives them a surprising amount of depth for something on a 2-ounce chocolate skull! The flavors include:

  • Blanca - Venezuelan white chocolate (33% cocoa butter)
  • Red Fire - Ancho and chipotle chilies, Ceylon cinnamon, dark chocolate
  • Barcelona - Hickory smoked almonds, grey sea salt, deep milk chocolate

The one thing that is scary about these skulls is the price. They sell for $8 each! Of course, when you're going to go all-out for a holiday celebration anyway, a little indulgence is warranted, right?

Skull mini-cake pan

Want an alternative to a pumpkin pan for Halloween? How about giving a (semi) scary Skull Cake Pan a try? The nonstick metal pan measures only 7 1/2" x 8 1/4" and makes four little skulls at a time. You can make them as creepy or as cute as you like - depending on who your audience is and whether you are trying to go for a dessert for a really elaborate party.

I suspect that this pan is meant more for Day of the Dead celebrations than it is for Halloween, but that doesn't mean that it can't do double-duty and produce cakes for both occasions. And as long as you have a good cupcake recipe, I don't think that anyone will object to having cake two days in a row.

Fastest pint of Guinness

There are a lot of college kids who think that they can drink a pint, mug or stein of beer faster than any of their buddies. No doubt that there are some who are quite quick on the draw, but when it comes to Guinness, there can only be one fastest drinker. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the fastest pint of stout was downed in a mere 2.1 seconds by Peter Dowdeswell in London, on April 24, 2001. The stout was Guinness. Mr. Dowdeswell is a competitive eater and avid beer drinker, who began his career after deciding to try to break every beer-drinking record in the 1975 book of world's records. He also drank a yard of ale (2 liters) in 5 seconds.
