Gourmet ice for your cocktail?

Ice isn't just ice. At least when it comes to your cocktails. If you're going to be using premium spirits and premium mixers, then you should think about your ice as well. Ice has become a topic of much discussion by top mixologists and cocktailians around the world. Designer ice is becoming the rage.

The first thing to consider is what type of water? Filtered, spring, mineral, etc. Many high end bars are using premium bottled water like Fiji water. Others are using filtered and triple distilled water.

The next is the size and shape of the cube. Crushed ice melts fast and is great for soda, but not in a cocktail. Hand chipped ice is great because you can control the size of the chips. Larger pieces melt slower and also can help with muddling citrus or mint into the drink. Also it looks great as it sparkles and reflects in the drink. Some places are trying different shapes such as large cubes and spheres. These have large surface area, but melt slow, so they chill the drink but don't water it down too fast.

So it all depends upon the purpose you plan to use the ice for. Small pieces for cooling fast and watering down the drink. Middle size pieces for tall drinks like a G&T or for shaking in cocktails. Large, regular sized and shaped pieces for a fine spirit on the rocks, so it chills it but doesn't water it down too much.



The McFlurry is now hedgehog-friendly

After more than five years of pressure from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, McDonald's recently announced that it will change the design of its McFlurry cups to make them less dangerous to hungry hedgehogs. Apparently the little critters are prone to crawling into discarded cups to lap up the last of the melted ice cream only to find themselves stuck there. The result is often death by starvation and dehydration, according to The Times. The new cups will have smaller openings that should make them harder for hedgehogs to get into.

Oblong Oreo Dunkers change a classic shape

Classic OreosThis summer, Oreos are changing their classic, round shape for six weeks. The new Oreos, called Dunkers, will be oblong, stretched out to enable easier dunking. Apparently, the most popular way to eat Oreos is to dunk them in milk, but most of their advertising has focused on the "twist" and "lick" aspects of their "Twist, Lick and Dunk" theme. Additionally, instead of having the "Oreo" logo printed on the cookies, they will feature new slogans, like "Dunk Me," "Milk's Favorite Cookie" and lines that indicate suggested levels of dunking. The campaign's success, when it is launched in June, will determine whether the classic cookies will make their shape-shifting permanent.

AdJab doesn't like the idea of the shape change because they're not big fans of the dunking concept. I could go either way as far as dunking is concerned, but I suspect that the "twist" part of the Oreo-eating process will be made much more difficult by having an oblong cookie. As the twist is my favorite part of eating Oreos, I think I'll be in favor of sticking to the traditional shape.

Fat bug cake pan

It is not clear what the people at Berndes, a German cookware company, were thinking when they designed this pan. It is clear, however, that they did not agonize over the name, calling it simply the Fat Bug Cake Pan. This is not the usual shape you expect to find in a cake pan. You expect roses, hearts and maybe even a butterfly. You definitely do not expect to see a cast aluminum larvae mold. I give them full credit for originality, and the pan is no doubt of high quality, but I still can't see spending $25 to buy a pan shaped like, to put it generously, a "fat bug."

Pyramidal Watermelons: Why?

The Japanese have had square watermelons for a while. Due to lack of space, the most pragmatic thing to do to a watermelon is, well, to square it. These edgy melons come at a price of $82 each. I'm not sure on what occasion I would buy a watermelon if it were that expensive, but it sure wouldn't be for a quick snack!

Now, the Japanese have innovated again with pyramid-shaped watermelons. I'm a little confused about the practical applications of this--perhaps one could stack more watermelons in a given space by interleaving them.
