Happy Birthday - What Can I Get You Folks?

When I was applying for my first waitress job, my total lack of experience qualified me to work at two types of places: Coney Islands, the Greek diner/chili parlor mash-ups that are ubiquitous in southeast Michigan, and family dining chains clustered around highway exits. I opted for the former, mostly so I wouldn't have to sing.

I haven't visited a Lone Star Steakhouse since the mid-1990s, but the restaurant's original shtick included a server-led birthday boot scoot that involved way more coordination and tune-carrying than I could possibly muster. Even if I'd been blessed with Ethel Merman's pipes, I'm not sure I'd have been any more gung-ho about breaking out in birthday song: The whole routine seemed designed to shame the staff and mortify the celebrant.

What Can I Get You Folks? - Gesturing Toward Better Service

Most diners have mastered the art of eating with a fork, but a surprising number of them still use their fingers to signal when they want something from their server.

Granted, restaurants aren't always designed to make it easy for guests to grab their servers' attention: Eateries tend to be noisy, dark places in which it's sometimes impossible to communicate with the person seated directly across from you, let alone the staffer who's scurrying forward and back with tall stacks of plates.

Customers often resort to the most primitive methods of expression: They snap their fingers. They wave their arms like football referees. They pantomime signing a check, often adding such enthusiastic flourishes to their imagined John Hancocks that they nearly strike someone at a neighboring table.

Restaurant Calls Toddler F-Word on Check

A British restaurant is in hot water after one of their employees reportedly referred to a toddler as a "little f----r" on the check.

Craig and Kimberley Cartin received the receipt at Cactus Joe's, a new Mexican restaurant in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England on Aug. 30, the Daily Mail reports. Their 2-year-old, Molly, had been restless during the meal.

Listed among miscellaneous extras such as medium spice was "thankyoulittell f----r."

See the receipt, after the jump.

Nora Ephron wants a smaller dessert spoon, among other things

waiter with saltDoes it irritate you when a waiter drops off your food at your table, you haven't even taken a bite of your food, then he sprints back to see if "everything is alright?" What about a server who constantly refills your water glass, even though it never dips below half-full? Do you hate having to search the table for salt and pepper shakers, only to find that the restaurant doesn't provide them because "the food has already been properly seasoned and therefore doesn't need more salt?"

It sure bothers Nora Ephron, who has written a funny Op-Ed piece in the New York Times about what kinds of things you can expect (and not expect) these days when you're dining out: Pellegrino too eagerly poured into inappropriately oversized glass, fresh ground pepper from enormous peppermills, and giant dessert spoons.

We've also talked about whether servers should clear plates as diners finish or all at once at then end, but are there other things that irk you about restaurant behaviors when you're dining out?
