Food Porn: City of biscuits

In February, a team of artists spent six days creating rendition of a city out of an unusual building material: biscuits. The biscuit city was hardly cookie-cutter, though. It used approximately 72,000 biscuits of different kinds and had little repetition. Buildings included a city hall, sports stadium and suspension bridges, as well as interpretations of famous buildings and architecture from around the world, like a traditional Asian village and New York's Empire State Building. At nearly 40-feet (12-meters) in length, it was surely one of the largest displays of its kind. The biscuit city was on display at the Selfridges in Oxford Street in London where, after the display period, it was eaten by hungry patrons on February 22nd, washed down with gallons of free tea. For more photos of the city, a nice cup of tea and a sit down checked out the display in person.

Eating the City

a rather blurred shot of SelfridgesSelfridges (I much prefer Selfridges to Harvey Nicks by the way) is to play host to famed Chinese artist Song Dong.

Who he? He is the chap who recreated traditional Chinese paintings out of fishheads and created a map of the world out of fruit . His cityscapes made from biscuits and sweets caused a sensation in France and China but his showing in Selfridges is planed to top them all in scale. Some tower blocks are to be up to 3ft high.

With six assistants and over five days he plans to use an estimated 72,000 biscuits to construct everything from office tower blocks, flyovers and roads to a sports stadium and municipal buildings. And then everyone can eat it.

The display will be on view in the Selfridges atrium from February 15th - 22nd.

D is for Doughnuts - Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

I just happened to find myself in Selfridges yesterday, and would you believe it? If you use the side door to get into the food court, you just happen to walk in on a Krispy Kreme franchise - about the only one in the UK. Well what would you do? Faced with their demise, the fact they are supposed to be the best doughnuts since the last lot and that today is D day on Slashfood I just had to buy some. Had to, I tell ye!
