Ritz Mock Apple Pie

ritz mock apple pie
No apples were harmed in the baking of this pie.

Perhaps at some point in the distant past, it was possible for a person under the age of 50 to whip up a mock apple pie, hold the irony. Now in an age wherein slowstainable locaheirganic produce is de rigueur in many circles (not mine, but then again, I pour cherry soda all over unsuspecting hams and eat brains from a can) it seems almost viciously retrograde to dump lemony simple syrup on top of a pile of mushed-up crackers and pass it off as fruit.

So don't do that. Just enjoy it for its bizarrely satisfying damp cracker heft. Use, I dunno, heirloom leaf lard in the crust or send a tithe to Michael Pollan if you feel you need to, but really, this pie is in no need of apology.

Late Night Snacks: Ritz Nachos

RitzLast night I made what I think is one of the top 5 bad food decisions in my life. I went to bed but woke up around 2:30am, incredibly hungry and craving nachos and something cheesy. So I stumbled out of bed and realized that I didn't have any nacho chips and no salsa. What did I do? Why, I used Ritz Crackers instead, of course!

I placed a bunch of Ritz crackers on the plate and covered them with Sargento Nacho and Taco Shredded Cheese and slices of Velveeta (yeah). I popped them in the microwave for about 40 seconds (please note I was lazy and it was 2:30 in the morning so the oven was out of the question), and chomped on them.

Pop Food: Garlic & Herb Toppers

TownHouse crackersKeebler has been on quite a roll with their TownHouse line of crackers (the Bistro crackers are quite good). They're releasing several different flavors of their Toppers crackers, the latest being Garlic & Herb.

How are they? They're OK. The problem I have is that the garlic and herb flavors aren't quite strong enough. They have a really strong flavor of their regular buttery Toppers and then the mild garlic and herb flavor kicks in. I wish the flavor was stronger, like the garlic and herb crackers that you can get in the Ritz line and the Triscuit line and various veggie-flavored crackers.

Toppers are so named because they are a bit thicker than typical crackers and have a little curved "bowl" so you can put toppings on them without stuff fall off. According to the back of the box, you can "top 'em," "dip 'em," "serve 'em," or have them "stand alone." That last one sounds kinda odd. What, you don't eat them at all, you just let them sit there untopped and alone? Weird.

Tip of the Day

Even though the crust of your pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving turned out flaky and buttery, consider everyone "pie"-ed out. Try these non-pie ways to use up leftover disk of dough.
