"reindeer" news and stories

Reindeer pate is made from Rudolph's relatives

reindeer pateI thought it was joke when I first saw it because the can looks like an Alpo can that has someone's home laser-printed label stuck on over it.

But reindeer pate is real.

It's not all liver, but made from reindeer meat, pork, lard, garlic, onions, wheat flour, cream, whole egg, cognac, salt, and spices. The pate is made by the Sami herdsman in Sweden, and apparently, reindeer meat is healthy, as it has only 2% fat. Of course, the "liver" part of the pate might negate that.

The reindeer pate is available for £9.95 at Firebox in the UK, which also has other interestingly edible items like alligator curry and insects.

Rudolf the red nose dinner?

Over at suvalley news are various articles on reindeer and their roles in teaching, tourist attractions, clothing, shelter, and yes, food. It is a traditional food of the Alaskan natives. Some examples of fine reindeer delicacies include sausage, meatballs, stew, and simply filets. Would you be willing to eat reindeer (or caribou, as it is called when wild in North America)? And, if you've eaten it before, what do you think of it?
