Trader Joe's is looking for HiiP recipes

Trader Joe's Recipe Showdown

Trader Joe's is looking for recipes that are HiiP (Highly Innovative Ingredient Pairings). The requirements are that recipes use up to four Trader Joe's products, no alcohol, and take 20 minutes or less to prepare and cook.

I'm left wondering just how innovative of a recipe they are looking for. Do they want recipes like those featured in the blog event Things that Go Really Well Together that have pairings as unique as white chocolate and caviar, or are they looking for something a bit more mainstream? I'll be very interested to see the results.

If you are in need of inspiration, check out the foodpairing site. Click any food and it will tell you what it best pairs with chemically. Read the rest of the contest details on the Trader Joe's site and enter by May 15th. Good luck!

Thanks, Alanna, for the tip!

You can enter any and all of the categories: Bake it organic, Asian exotic, chocolate craze, or salt of the earth. If you are interested, you can check out the rules and requirements here.

If you like to cook and create your own recipes, check out this contest. It could be a chance to win some useful prizes and get your creations out into the world.

White Castle recipe contest winner

White Castle LogoEvery year for the last 16, the White Castle restaurant chain has run a contest in which they ask people to create a recipe that uses 10 White Castle hamburgers. Leslye Lewis, this year's winner was crowned on Monday and won the top honors for her creation that she calls, "The Latkes You Crave."

The recipe takes the hamburger patties off the buns and crumbles them into a batter of potato, onion, flour, eggs and seasonings. They are then cooked in vegetable oil and served warm with traditional latke sides (applesauce and sour cream). If you want to make your own White Castle latkes you are in luck, as the recipe is after the jump.

Other finalist dishes (all made out of White Castle sliders) included dim sum, a White Castle Ruben Bake, a Seven-Layer Burger and a White Casterole Breakfast Bake.

Search for the best deli sandwich

If you think that you are the master of sandwich making, especially if you prefer deli-style sandwiches with sliced meats to hot ones, you might want to consider entering your recipe in the Sara Lee Sandwich Search. The contest is in its second year, and hopes to uncover the best deli-style sandwich in the country. The winner gets a trip for 4 to Hawaii, so even if you're not a huge sandwich fan, there's no time like the present to become one.

Last year's winners (pdf) are a good place to start brainstorming. You'll notice that the top two are both Hawaiian-themed, but don't let that scare you if you don't usually get tropical with your sandwiches; the others are distinctly less exotic, many with slight twists on favorite foods. The only rules are that the sandwich must use at least one sliced cheese product and one sliced deli meat product - both from Sara Lee, of course. Fifty first place winners get $200 each, which isn't a trip to Hawaii, but certainly isn't bad for a sandwich.
