Editor's Picks - Best of the Rest

For the first state dinner hosted by the Obamas, Marcus Samuelsson served White House arugula -- plus collard greens and curried prawns -- to 320 guests on the White House's South Lawn.

Now that more cooks than ever are searching online for recipes, it's easy to map who's serving what for Thanksgiving across the country. Yet many still find it hard to throw out their old-fashioned recipe cards.

Family Recipe Cards - The Hungry Bride

Recipes from friends and family from my bridal shower.

There are certain things in this world that make me very happy, and among them are recipes that have meaning or stories behind them. Knowing this, my best friend decided to skip the wishing well for my bridal shower and instead included recipe cards with the invitations, simply asking guests to add to my collection.

Out of all the gifts I received -- and I received many -- these recipes take the cake. They were not only cute (Etsy), but they fit perfectly in my wooden recipe box.

Two weeks later, after all the thank-you notes had been mailed, I finally got around to really reading through the recipes. It was fun to see that the people who knew me the best really took the time to write down something they knew I would love. Others who don't love to cook got creative and still managed to please my palate!

Find out some of my favorite recipes and clever ideas after the jump -- and feel free to add to my collection by sharing a recipe with me in the comments section.

Etsy Funk for Foodies

Rubber stand mixer stamp

The other night, I decided to peruse Etsy in search for recipe cards that appeal to my foodie fanaticism. Of course, I was once again out of luck, but I did find some other great foodie pieces I had to share.
  • Stand Mixer Hand Carved Rubber Stamp -- I just love this little thing, pictured above. It's wonderfully simplistic, but can also come personalized so that all of your foodie correspondences can have your stand mixer stamp. It also comes with a recipe card template.
  • Fork Easel -- These are ideal for holding your recipes, notes, business cards, or even place cards at the table. All are made with old and varied forks, so it's also a classy way to reuse tossed items.
  • "This doesn't taste like crap:" Recipe Cards -- They're not what I'm looking for to fill my own recipe box, but these suckers never fail to make me laugh every time I look for them. They're perfect for cheap and unique gifts for your spunky and unconventional cooks.

The Amazing Mackerel Pudding Plan, Cookbook of the Day

Technically, this is not a cookbook, but it does have recipes. Whether you actually want to attempt (or consume) them is an entirely different question. The Amazing Mackerel Pudding Plan: Classic Diet Recipe Cards from the 1970s is a book that features over 100 different, full-color, diet recipe cards. Each recipe card comes with hilarious commentary from author and complier Wendy McClure, who blogs at Pound and runs candyboots, where you can see some more recipe cards from the 1970s. This is the same sort of thing that you might see at the gallery of regrettable food, only better.

How much better can a book with a recipe for "Mackerelly" (I don't know what that is, nor do I care to) get?

It actually has a Flickr pool where you can see user submitted photos of some of the recipes, including the fluffy mackerel pudding. As a sample, you can see a picture of the Frankfurter Crown Roast after the jump.
