McDonald's has recalled 12 million "Shrek" drinking glasses because they contain cadmium -- a carcinogen that can cause lung, kidney, intestinal and bone damage, the LA Times reported.
The fast-food chain sold the glasses for $2 each as a promotional tie-in with "Shrek Forever After" -- the fourth and (allegedly) final installment of the Shrek animated film series.
Those who bought the glasses are advised to keep them away from kids and can return them to the restaurant for a refund, the paper reported. The glasses, which feature one of four designs, were sold in May and June.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Friday after Rep. Jackie Speier (D) received an anonymous tip last week, the paper reported.
Speier praised McDonald's for taking quick action, but said the company and others must "do a better job of thoroughly reviewing their domestic and international supply chains to keep products with potentially dangerous elements from ever hitting their shelves."
She said: "Our children's health should not depend on the consciences of anonymous sources ... Although McDonald's did the right thing by recalling these products, we need stronger testing standards to ensure that all children's products are proven safe before they hit the shelves. Cadmium is a toxic substance that is extremely dangerous to the developmental health of children."
McDonald's spokesman, Walt Riker, told the Los Angeles Times: "We've had a good, constructive two-way dialogue with the congresswoman's office and with the Consumer Product Safety Commission."
The glasses were produced by ARC International, based in Millville, N.J., reports CNNMoney.com.

My son's crib was recalled because it was a death trap... Thankfully he didn't kill himself in the two years he slept in it. He got his little leg stuck in the bars though because they were too wide. Kids were putting their heads through the bars and choking themselves in their sleep. Oh, and the walker that I used when I was a baby wasn't quite wide enough to stop me from going down stairs. Thankfully I never tried that before they recalled it. What's wrong with people?!?!?!
