Yummy gummy rat dip

A new candy called liquid rat dipAre you a sucker for novelty candy? Do you salivate for an edible gross out?
You're in luck. The folks over at Sandy Candy have come up with a new one just in time for the Year of the Rat.

The new product is called Liquid Rat Dip, and it's actually a gooey liquid that you can dip Sandy Candy's gummy rats into. It comes in a container that resembles a specimen collection container, which is a neat packaging idea even though I'm not sure about the reasoning behind it. The company makes the "super sour candy" in four flavors: cherry, green apple, lemonade and fruit punch. You can also get Rat Dip Powder. The powder candy is sold in big tubs with the gummy rats. From what I can determine from the website, the Liquid Rat Dip is sold separately of the gummy rats. The rats come in three flavors, and there are a whopping 25 flavors of the powder, which the website does not specify.

All in all, if you're looking for a fun, weird, totally American treat, you might want to check out Liquid Rat Dip. I know I've never run into a gummy candy I didn't like. Would gummy rats dipped in the goo be disrespectful at a Chinese New Year Celebration?

Company fined after rats, maggots are found in warehouse

Just in time for lunch comes this news story from the UK.

Skelfayre has been fined 16,900 pounds after an investigation discovered that one of their warehouses was infested with rats and maggots, and that rats had gnawed at some of the food and urinated and defecated on some of it as well. In July of last year the food was recalled and destroyed. The food was headed to care homes, which I'm going to assume is what they call nursing facilities in the UK(?).

Oh, there were bird droppings around the food too. Let's get on to better food news, shall we?

Some Boston restaurants have rats too

ratWell, this just about ruined my appetite.

We went through seeing those videos of the rats running around some of New York City's eateries, and now we have tonight's Inside Edition showing video that exposes the little monsters having fun at night in some of Boston's restaurants. It's part of a regular feature they do now called "Rat Patrol."

Some of the restaurants include Ruth's Chris Steak House, near downtown crossing if you know the area, McCormick & Schmick's, and The China Pearl. Ruth's Chris is working with the health inspector on a regular basis, and the other restaurants have regular checkups as well.

The owner of The China Pearl says that the Big Dig construction over the past few years has displaced many of the rodents.

A bad week for NYC pizza makers named De Marco

It hasn't been such a good week for New York City pizza makers named De Marco. First came the shooting rampage that started at De Marco's Pizzeria and left four dead. I've enjoyed a slice and the occasional bowl of linguine puttanesca at this West Village spot, which is owned by Dominick Demarco Jr., the son of the pizzaiolo behind Brooklyn's legendary Di Fara Pizza. I wish De Marco's all the luck in the world, but the idea of eating there anytime soon creeps me out.

Thankfully, the second mishap to befall the De Marco family this week is not nearly as grave. Di Fara Pizza has been swept up in all the commotion caused by rats in my fair city's eateries. It seems that as of yesterday afternoon Midwood's temple of pizza artistry had been temporarily closed by the Health Department. As a fan of this spot I'm not surprised that it's been shuttered, though I am glad that it wasn't for anything nearly as serious as vermin. It's long been a dirty little secret that Di Fara's is a tad unkempt, but only because they're so insanely busy. I gave them a ring this morning and the maestro himself answered. He told me that they're closed for a few days for "little things." I felt a sense of relief wash over me as I pondered eating several perfect slices there in the very near future. [via Slice]

Leader of New York City's Taco Bell rats speaks out

The playful antics of the rats at a Taco Bell-KFC restaurant in New York City's Greenwich Village have probably seen more ink than Taco Bell's recent E. coli outbreak. Their performance has certainly garnered tons of local TV news coverage and as of this writing has more than 800 hits on YouTube.

The good folks over at The Scoop over on the NRN Foodservice Blog reported on the story behind the story the other day via an exclusive interview with the leader of the Taco Bell rats. And quite a scoop it was. They managed to catch the leader before his appearance on Conan later that night. Among the revelations from the interview is the fact that the rats' celebrity like that of most stars was no easy task. They'd been practicing their dance moves for more than two months starting with when they were discovered by the city's Health Department in December.

As one might imagine, the leader describes living in the restaurant as a paradise chock-full of tacos and fried chicken. And he offers up a theory as to why the Health Department allowed the fast-food joint to continue to operate even though a troupe of performing rats had set up shop. They're just too busy with important matters like protecting the public from the trans-fat menace. Never let it be said that New York City doesn't support the arts.

Rat Update: More NYC restaurants close

Yum Brands, the company that owns the KFC/Taco Bell that was in the news recently because it was overrun by rats, has decided to close several more NYC restaurants owned by the company.

There's no word on exactly how many of the restaurants in the area are going to close, but the company said in a statement that they "will not compromise on our food and restaurant quality." The eateries are going to remain closed until they get the OK to reopen from city health inspectors.

Check out the rat slide show if you've forgotten what the whole nasty scene looked like.

Fast food creates "SuperRat" in Britain

uk ratsIf we ever needed a non-health-related reason to not eat fast food, here it is - rats. The estimated rat population in the UK has exploded to 60 million. That's one for every person in living in the UK. However, it's not just the quantity of rats, it's the quality of the rat. They're bigger, badder, and live a lot longer due to more protein in their diets. According to the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, the rats are turning to SuperRats, feeding off of the fast food litter like burgers, fries and kebabs, that Britons throw into the streets.

Alight, so the blame can't be put entirely on fast food. Apparently, Britons throw apple cores, banana and orange peels, bread crusts and chocolate onto the streets, all adding to the SuperDiet of these SuperRats.

Hey, if you're not curbing the fast food littering to keep the rat population down, at least do it for the hedgehog.

School Food Recall

Rats in the kitchen! Not the best thing in the world; especially when your kitchen serves up grub for hoards of school kids.

Actually its not the Welsh schools that suffered a rat infestation but a warehouse that supplies 300 schools in the region. Pembrokeshire Council said rats were found during a routine inspection at the Skelfayre warehouse in Pembroke Docks. This warehouse sends out food for school meals to Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion but also supplies other businesses including the schools, residential care homes, hotels, and restaurants . The contaminated food will be destroyed.

Caffeine might be an aphrodisiac for some

An aphrodisiac is a substance that is believed to increase the sex drive and the level of sexual arousal. A recent study indicates that caffeine might be an aphrodisiac for women who consume it infrequently. The study was based on the reactions of female rats, who showed a "notable increase" in their sex drive and more likely than other female mice to mate multiple times. From this data, scientists naturally felt that the behavior of these rats was likely to apply to human women due to their belief that the desire for females to have sex is a social construct of both species.

Caffeine is a mild stimulant and triggers the brain to respond in the same way, though on a lesser scale, as stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines. Drugs of this nature have an addictive quality and people who consume caffeine on a regular basis can develop a tolerance to its effects, while others will almost immediately feel a boost of energy.
