Cadbury does not own the color purple

A Cadbury's chocolate bar with Yesterday, I brought you a story about a victory for Ferrero Rocher. Well today, here's a victory for the little guy.

There's been a five year court battle between Cadbury and an Australian chocolate maker, Darrell Lea. The international chocolate giant claims that it owns the color purple as far as packaging and marketing chocolate is concerned. Cadbury says that Darrell Lea, who uses purple for "its store signage, uniforms and products was too similar to its own and confused customers."

There are only so many colors, in all reality. There are far more people making chocolate products than there are colors to go around. As long as one isn't directly copying the look of another, I think that we can share a few colors.

Colorful cauliflower might be healthier

colorful cauliflower
We're taught that in general, color is more desirable than white in food. This hasn't necessarily been the case for cauliflower, which belies its white color with a nutrition profile similar to its cruciferous siblings, broccoli and cabbage. Cauliflower is high in vitamin C and cancer-fighting antioxidants.

However, thanks to selective breeding (not genetic engineering), cauliflower in different colors are available. They taste the same as white cauliflower, but are just, well, more fun on the plate. Scientists are also claiming that they might be healthier for you than white cauliflower because of the benefits from the compounds that give the vegetables the color.

Healthier than white or not, if its being colorful makes you and your family eat it, that's all the better!

Celebs have the weirdest diets

Mariah Carey recently announced that, three days a week, she only eats purple foods. She claims that purple foods prevent her from getting wrinkles and switched to the regime after "hearing the food is high in vitamins and anti-oxidants." So, what does she eat on those days? Grapes, plums and beetroot are specifically mentioned, but other purple foods include purple potatoes, red onions, radishes (since they're counting beetroot), kale, cauliflower, eggplants and various berries, too.

Granted, we know that berries are superfoods, but this all sounds more than a little crazy. I wonder if she's including purple cocktails in her diet, too....

What's so great about Peeps?

peepsI love Peeps. Not the creepy new ones that Just Born is releasing at every conceivable holiday, though. In fact, the black Halloween ones are just downright wrong, as are the filled marshmallows. But the marshmallow yellow chicks and purple bunnies are simply perfect. They're sweet and sugary, light and fluffy. They're made out of sugar, corn syrup and gelatin, in much the same way as homemade marshmallows. I always buy them around Easter and in the grand scheme of Easter confections, the low-cal, no-fat Peeps are not a bad option, with only 32 calories per peep.

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
