Pom Iced Coffee Considered

bottle of pom iced coffeeAs we've noted, it's iced coffee time, folks. While we can all agree that the best version is that which is freshly brewed, sometimes you've got to make do with what can be grabbed out of the convenience store fridge. Starbucks' Frappuccino is a perennial favorite, and we're fans of their Doubleshot Energy Drink (especially the new Cinnamon Dulce flavor) when caffeine alone isn't quite enough.

Behold, however, a challenge to Starbucks supremacy from Pom Iced Coffee. Far from an unpleasant mix of joe and pomegranate juice (though it does feature a touch of the antioxidant-laced fruit extract), this is one smooth-blended iced coffee drink. The cafe au lait version is delightful, but it is the chocolate that may soon boast the title of best bottled iced coffee, with an addiction-inspiring taste reminiscent of a blend of Yoo-Hoo and chocolate Nestle Quik.

The only problem with this cooling nectar? It's only available at select stores and Whole Foods in the Northeast (though bottles have been spied at 99-cent stores on the west coast). If anything were to make a convenience store crawl or a trip to a pricey specialty grocer worth it, it is Pom Chocolate Iced Coffee. So stock up.

Sunday Happy Hour: The Rosy Pom

Here's a cocktail that is actually good for you. Chock full of anti-oxidants from the Sence rose nectar, cranberry juice, and pomegranate juice. Recipe courtesy of CocktailAtlas.com.

Rosy Pom

The Rosy Pom was crated for the Erotic Café inside the ZUMANITY Theatre at New York-New York in Las Vegas. Zumanity is a provocative cabaret-style production with a Cirque du Soleil twist. This playful cocktail, made with SEX Vodka and rose nectar, is the perfect drink to get you in the mood for a sexy show.

1.5oz Sex Vodka
.5oz Sence Rose Nectar
.5oz Cointreau
1oz Cranberry Juice
Splash of POM pomegranate juice

Combine ingredients with ice.
Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a rose petal.

POM Wonderful juice pulled from shelves due to hoax

POM Wonderful pomegranate juices were pulled off the shelves by Wild Oats Markets in seven stores in Maine, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut after an animal rights group, in an act of terrorism, claimed they tampered with 487 bottles. POM says the claim was a hoax and that "So far we are not aware of any consumers who have become ill as a result of these purported actions."

In response to questions about the situation Wild Oats spokeswoman Sonja Tuitele said that "as soon as we get test results that demonstrate that it has not been tampered with, we will reorder the product and have it back on our shelves. We want to make sure the product is safe before we continue selling it in stores that may have been targeted."

The claim was made in an anonymous letter posted on a website for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office and said that bottles "along the Eastern seaboard in stores like Wild Oats, D'Agostino and Food Emporiums" had been tampered with and that the "contaminated contents of the bottles would cause diarrhea, vomiting and headaches, but not death."

This isn't the first time that POM has become the target of animal rights terrorists, supposedly they are outraged because POM funds research on the medical benefits of pomegranate juice and part of that involves animals. To the terrorists all I have to say is Relax, you'll live longer. Expect POM to be back onto store shelves soon.

Is Pom Wonderful, wonderful?

The San Francisco Chronicle did a taste test of pure pomegranate juices, more and more of which have been finding their way onto shelves and into refrigerators in grocery stores as the antioxidant-rich fruit gains popularity. Their tasting only dealt with the pure juices (not blends) and tasters picked POM Wonderful as their favorite, over brands like L&A, Langers, Frutzzo, Knudsen and Trader Joe's. The brilliant jewel color of the juice was mentioned several times by tasters, but the "blend of sweet and tangy" flavor won over 4/5 of the panelists.

Pomegranate juice, particularly POM, isn't cheap and sells for around $3.99 for 16-ounces. While it won against other pomegranate juices, is it really worth buying over other kinds of juice from a taste perspective?

I liked the blueberry-pomegranate blend more than the pure pomegranate juice, myself, and I still think that I'd much rather eat some actual pomegranate than drink either of the beverages.

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
