Pikachu Triumvirate - Box Lunch

For your lunchtime pleasure, I'm presenting a series of my favorite bento boxes. Bento are Japanese home-prepared meals served in special boxes, usually eaten for lunch at work or school. These days, bento enthusiasts from all over the world share their creations on Flickr.

Another great example of the Japanese obsession with kawaii (cuteness), this dangerously adorable Pokemon-themed bento from Kotaku features two onigiri decorated with Pikachu-stamped nori and a fish cake with an embedded Pikachu image.

If you thought we were going to get through this candy-giving holiday unscathed, sadly, you were mistaken. Sherwood Brands of Maryland, which imported the candy from China, says that it is recalling all of its Pokemon Valentine Cards and Pops, because a couple of pops have been found to contain metal pieces (a staple and part of a razor blade). While the metal fragments have only been found in Central Florida, the pops have been pulled off shelves nationwide.

So far the tainted pops have all been purchased at Dollar General stores. Officials say that they do not appear to have been tampered with and that the metal fragments were baked into the candies when they were first made. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries.

I am not exactly sure why the "experimenters" were inspired to use a Pokemon character creator intended for use with Play-Doh to make appetizers, but the important point is that they did it, and now we have very useful, well illustrated information about how to make Pikachu appetizers.

Instead of using Play Doh, they sent various cheese through the toy's extruder, which molds it into the shape of Pokemon. From their experiment, they determined that thinner, softer cheeses like Brie work as the best medium. However, very soft, sticky cheeses end up sticking to the mold and become deformed upon extraction.

As an addendum to the original experiment, instant mashed potatoes were used and the subsequent forms were deep fried, successfully creating Pikachu-shaped tater tots.
