Food Porn: Pink Lemonade

Thinking about Lemonade this morning put me in the mood for something refreshing and the Pink Lemonade from Simply Recipes sounds like just the thing. Elise's recipe is extra-pink and uses cranberry juice to give it its distinctive coloring, unlike commercial versions which use food colorings or concentrated natural colors to create pinkness. The natural tartness of the cranberry juice also helps it to blend well with the lemon flavor, creating a smooth and balanced drink. Sure - it's a tiny bit girly looking, but who could turn down a glass of lemonade, knowing that it was homemade? If you can't use plain sugar for any reason, you could try sweetening the juice with Splenda, too.

Taste test: Trader Joe's French Market Pink Lemonade

trader joe's pink lemonadeFor Easter brunch a few weeks ago, I served the usual brunch-y drinks: orange juice, coffee, tea, and of course, mimosas. At the last minute while shopping for a few ingredients at Trader Joe's, I was seduced by the pretty pink, curved bottles of the French Market Pink Lemonade. I bought two bottles. They were $2.29 each.

The lemonade was a hit at the brunch, but I wasn't won over on taste. They are lightly carbonated, so the fact that they are pink and sparkly was perfect for Easter, but they tasted too much like a plain soda rather than lemonade, and had a strange, artificial aftertaste.

I think I'd rather make lemonade myself and add a little club soda to give it "sparkle."
