Foodie-Friendly iPhone Apps On Rise

By Pervaiz Shallwani
We're big proponents of buying local when possible and just spied some curious data about 5,500 iPhone users buying a $3 Locavore app (created by a Slashfood friend) in a mere month. It tells iPhone addicts what's in season, what's en route and where nearby farmers' markets are located.

Whoa. We wondered what other yummy things we could do if we got with the times and finally embraced an iPhone for our foodie needs. Boy, were we shocked. There are hundreds of free and paid downloads including one for beer, one for soda and a fast-food meal calorie counter.

Not only are food nerd darlings Serious Eats, Food Network and Yelp at our fingertips, so is the FDA with food recall news (though their freebie Twitter also works), a guide to finding cheap or free kids' meals at nearby eateries and Twecipe, which matches the dregs of those fridge contents to a recipe.

All this edible ammo available at the touch of a button makes us wonder whether Googling our munching needs is becoming just so 2008 and whether we should cave to the iFeed – er, iPhone -- trend. Have you?

Get cooking help with holiday hotlines

Even experienced cooks can use and extra hand around the holidays, and unless you have a personal chef already standing by to coach you through your problems, you might need to call in some help. Literally. Several organizations set up hotlines for food advice, so whether you need help with your turkey of help with dessert, you'll have someone to turn to.

  • Butterball- 1-800-BUTTERBALL; Nov. 1 to Dec. 31; 8am-8pm - This is the place for all turkey-related questions, staffed with specialists who have completed 'Butterball University.'
  • Crisco - 1-877-367-7438; Through Dec. 31; 8am-8pm - They have advice for any and all pie-related questions, such as how to get a more tender crust or prevent the crust from shrinking away from the sides of the pan.
  • Ocean Spray - 1-800-662-3263; Year-round; Mon.-Fri., 9am-4pm - Limited to cranberry questions, but great for last-minute tips or questions about specific products.
  • USDA - 1-888-674-6854; Year-round; 10am-4pm - If food safety is a worry, whether you need advice on food sensitivities or just have a question about food-borne illnesses, call this line.

The calming effect of sausages

Here's a bit of odd food-news. In Cumbria, the department of tourism has set up a dedicated telephone line, the Lakes' Escape Line, that is supposed to help people beat the winter blues when it is light out only a few hours each day. Callers will hear "cheerful sounds," including "a reading of Wordsworth's Daffodils [and] the sound of water lapping at Windermere." The sound of sizzling sausages - Cumberland sausages, of course - will also be prominently featured.

Daylight or no, you would think that people would be capable of comforting themselves with sausages at any time of year without calling a phone line to hear them sizzling in a pan. And wouldn't it be better to smell the sausages than to hear them anyway?

I got the impression that the Escape line would be a free-call, but if they charge for the sounds, residents might want to start saving up and stocking their freezers with sausages before winter sets in and they consider calling.

Tips for taking food photos in restaurants

Maki at i was just really very hungry posted a great guide on how to take food photos in restaurants and other public places. A prolific blogger and writer, she has extensive experience and, judging from her photos, is good at what she does. Now, with some practice (and a good camera), getting quality photos at home isn't too difficult because you have the control over the lighting and there is not time pressure because there isn't anyone at the next table peeking over to see what you're doing.

Restaurants can be challenging places to shoot if they're dark, quiet or crowded, and because they are places of business, it is important to be unobtrusive. Maki uses three different cameras, ranging from a professional model to a camera phone for taking her photos. While she prefers to use the pro camera, there are situations were the other two are simply more appropriate, such as trying to be discrete with a camera in a restaurant. Beyond camera selection, here are a few of her tips for taking good food photos away from home:

Subway gets Jared on the phone

As part of their new Fresh Resolutions program, Subway will offer customers daily phone messages from their spokesman Jared Fogle. Yep, the man with the big pants will drop pre-recorded inspirational gems onto your phone at the time of your choosing for the month of January. Actually, customers just specify if they need more encouragement in the morning, afternoon or both. There will also be drawings of random dieters who'll receive live calls from Jared. According to a recent AP article, messages will include things like "don't let things at work get you down." Apparently Subway is also offering a free nutrition advice hotline for the rest of this week, as well.

Tip of the Day

Your turkey may not be centerpiece of the Thanksgiving spread, if you follow our simple tips on scoring that holiday ham.
