What does your cocktail choice say about you?

Two cocktails, one orange and one red, placed next to each other on a table.
According to the Modern Drunkard, your cocktail preference can lend insight into your true personality. Whether or not you actually believe in these tests, it's one of the more fun personality quizes I've come across recently.

Did you know that if you happen to like Bloody Marys then "You enjoy music, long walks on the beach, and the occasional stabbing spree." And watch out, because if you happen to enjoy a Gimlet, "Something about your personality makes otherwise normal people use words like "bounder" and "cad."

Take a look and see what your cocktail choice reveals about you!

I am a Boston creme donut

boston creme donutA couple weekends ago, while on a road trip, a friend mentioned she'd heard you could tell a person's personality by their donut choice. We all immediately began discussing our favorite donuts - classic glazed, chocolate frosted, buttermilk. I favor Dunkin' Donuts - chocolate glazed or coconut - despite having grown up half an hour away from a drive-through Krispy Kreme store where you could get hot , melt-in-your-mouth glazed donuts right off the conveyor belt. Not that those aren't good - I just like the greater heft of a Dunkin Donuts cake donut. You can eat two and actually feel full. Or eat, say, five and feel really, really full.

So I Googled "donuts" and "personality" and came up with several quizzes and guides to donuts and human nature. The What Donuts Are You? quiz tells me I'm a Boston creme, tough on the outside but a gushy traditionalist within. Fry My Bacon's guide to donut personality tells me that my choice, coconut, makes me a mostly serene creature with a yearning for tropical places, yet prone to sudden fits of rage. Interesting. And woe on the double chocolate lovers - greedy, decadent, but never truly satisfied!

Old Farmer's Almanac has your pizza personality

Normally, one might expect to turn to the Farmer's Almanac, one of the longest continuously published books you can find, for predictions on the weather and advice about when to plant your crops. Perhaps because fewer people have crops that need planting these days, the newest edition of the Almanac has a lot more than just the crop report. It has your pizza personality.

Based on data from research done by the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, where they really love their pizza, you too can determine personality from pizza toppings:

  • One meat topping - Irritable, argumentative, procrastinators who "conveniently 'forget' work and home obligations" frequently
  • Several Meat toppings - Dramatic extroverts, who are impeccably groomed and crave attention
  • One vegetable - Empathetic, understanding, well-adjusted, easy-going and "who make ideal parents"
  • Several vegetables - Trustworthy, loyal, dependable, humble introverts
  • Non-traditional toppings (not just meat or veg) - Aggressive, achievement-oriented, natural leaders
  • Extra cheese - Just about everyone likes extra cheese

If you choose a different tipping every time, does that mean you have multiple personalities?

Pairing food and personality via ice cream

Though it may sound like the sort of thing you would expect to find in a chain e-mail, researcher Alan Hirsch has spent 20 years and studied over 18,000 people in order to discover what people's favorite foods say about them. Like tortilla chips the best? You might tend towards perfectionism. Is vanilla your favorite flavor? You might have a surprisingly spicy personality. All of Hirsch's participants came from the midwestern US, but he is sure that his findings can be applied elsewhere, with small regional variations.

Want to get a taste of personality? The Seattle Post Intelligencer has an excerpt from Hirch's book, What's Your Food Sign? How To Use Food Clues To Find Lasting Love. To learn about your compatibility through flavor, imagine that you and your date are at the ice-cream parlor. Which of these flavors would you pick?

  • Vanilla
  • Double chocolate chunk
  • Strawberries and cream
  • Banana cream pie
  • Chocolate chip
  • Butter pecan
  • Strawberry
  • Coffee
  • Mint chocolate chip
  • Rocky road

Ready? Read on to find out your results, including what your choice says about you and whether you're more compatible with coffee or chocolate chip.

Tip of the Day

Butterscotch sauce is a rich and buttery treat that makes a great seasonal dessert topper in place of chocolate or whipped cream.
