Flashy salt and pepper shakers

lantern salt and pepperIt's been a while since I've cooed over a set of salt and pepper shakers, so it's about time.

The Mini Lantern Salt and Pepper Shakers don't actually effect an "Ohmigod, how cute!" but they do get points for being totally functional, doing double duty as shakers as well as lights for the table. Each shaker has three white LED bulbs with built-in reflectors for even more brightness.

Because you always want to be prepared for a power outage just as you're about to reach for that salt shaker.

The set of shakers is available from HomeWetBar for $24.99

Vera Wang salt and pepper shakers

vera wang grosgrain salt and pepper shakersIt's time for Holiday shopping, and with the intention of avoiding crowds, traffic, over-spending, and the stress of trying to decide what to buy, I just might give a set of salt and pepper shakers to every person I know. It might sound silly, but everyone can use a little spice in their lives, and salt and pepper shakers are things that you can definitely find for every personality type.

For the classy, sophisticated newlywed couple, the Vera Wang Grosgrain Salt and Pepper Shakers are perfect. Vera Wang's designs are known for their classic elegance, and these sleek, tall-standing shakers with a simple raised dot-pattern is no different. Heck, most people know the designer for her wedding gowns, so these are perfect for the couple who's still trying to pay off their wedding bills.

The Vera Wang Grosgrain Salt and Pepper Shakers are available from Bloomingdale's for $55.

Salt and pepper shakers that Suck

Suck UK salt and pepper shakersCan you tell I have a slight obsession with salt and pepper shakers? Sure, I like a little pepper every once in a while for some "kick," but I am an extreme saltaholic. Unless I am in a restaurant where there is no salt available at the table, I always salt everything.

These shakers are nothing particularly special, though I am always fond of spherical shapes. They are 50 mm in diameter, are made of bakelite and stainless steel, and have silicone rubber rings in black and white to identify salt or pepper. What is special though, is the design house from which they came, Suck UK. What a name! The company also offers other interesting products in home design.

The Rolls Royce of salt and pepper mills comes from Peugeot

peugeot salt and pepper mills

So I guess I'm on a wee bit of a salt and pepper craze, because I love these mills from Peugeot.

Yes, Peugeot, the French car company, was the one that invented the mechanism in pepper grinders back in 1842. Though the internal technology of the actual grinding in every pepper mill out there is virtually unchanged from the original engineers' design, the exterior technology sure has come a long way. The original maker has electric salt and pepper mills that can season your food with just a touch of a button. That's a good thing for someone like me who salts and peppers everything. Everything. Sometimes without even tasting it first.

The mills are available from Shop.com for $200 - quite a luxurious price for salt and pepper mills!

Salt and Pepper Sets

Alessi Salt and Pepper SetCan someone please explain to me why salt and pepper mills are so bloody expensive? Even the most ugly, nastiest sets are upwards of £25; I am assuming it is the same world wide. I mean they are not that complicated an item to make are they?

Do manufacturers apply a mass of research and development funds on the screw or the crusher bit? I doubt it. For something decent, that isn't going to clog-up or crack or generally foul-up you need to spend even more. This set from Alessi (OK, so it is Alessi) costs £72 (around US$125/AUS$170) for the set. Thats a bit of metal standing 11.3cm (13.2cm for the pepper mill) high topped with a bit of coloured plastic.

Still want 'em though!

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
