Happy National Peach Pie Day!

There's nothing more American than pie -- or anything as timeless as these rustic peach pies by blogger Brown Eyed Baker, who praises their imperfect appearance for their comfort qualities: "Rustic is a great adjective for any type of food that looks a little disheveled but that keeps taunting you to take another bite until you have polished off waaaay more than your fair share."

Try out this cinnamon-and-nutmeg-scented peach pie recipe here but beware -- this sort of edible perfection, rustic as it may look, takes practice.

Pretty in Peach Pie - Feast Your Eyes

If you've spent any time wandering around the farmers market or produce section of your grocery store lately, you know we're smack dab in the middle of peach season. And creative bakers, like Deb from Smitten Kitchen, are stocking up. With the pound-and-a-half of farm-fresh New Jersey peaches she had in her refrigerator, Deb made this pretty peach and crème fraîche pie with a streusel crust, adapted loosely from a Martha Stewart recipe.

As if the description alone weren't already making our mouth water, Deb took our favorite kind of pie picture. Not only does the missing piece give us a glimpse of perfect peaches laced with crème fraîche, the fact that someone already took a piece throws that whole looks-too good-to-eat notion right out the window.

Peach pie is a country (and city) joy

The cover of the Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook
I was scanning my shelf of cookbooks tonight, when this one, the Complete Pie Cookbook leaped out at me. Being that we are approaching the end of the summer, the bounty of summer fruit is slightly overwhelming. Peaches, plums, nectarines and blackberries are cheap and gorgeous right now. Baking a pie is one good way of utilizing some of the summer abundance and make your friends and family happy at the same time.

The recipe after the jump is from a section called Peach Pies for Summer Suppers. The introduction to that section says, "Peach pie is a reward tired and hungry men who have worked late in the field trying to finish a job really appreciate. A cool evening and a peach pie are country joys to sample together."
