Bertoletti gets stuffed at turkey contest

Artie's Deli in New York held its annual turkey-eating contest last Wednesday, just before Thanksgiving. Each contestant was given a fully-cooked 12-pound turkey and the goal was to see who could eat the most in 12 minutes. Competitive eating champion Pat Bertoletti walked away from his competition, eating a full pound more meat than his closest rival and reaching a total of 4.8 pounds. Competitive eating fans might be surprised to know that Sonya Thomas, aka the black widow and the defending turkey-eating champ, was also competing. Unfortunately, she was disqualified after getting so much turkey into her mouth that she was unable to swallow. Bertoletti, for his part, said that he had a specific strategy that helped him. He started with the white meat because it was harder to chew, so that his jaw would have enough energy to get through it before moving onto the softer, moister dark meat. The runners up included Tim Janus (3.8 lbs), Arturo Rios (2.8 lbs) and Crazy Legs Conti (2.38 lbs).

Chocolate eating contest results

Here's a little update for those of you wondering about the results of the the GoldenPalace.net Valentine's Day Chocolate Massacre, mentioned yesterday. Hometown boy Patrick Bertoletti took first place by eating almost two pounds of chocolate hearts in seven minutes. The 20-year-old Bertoletti made news in the competitive eating arena last month when he bested competitive eating champs Sonya Thomas and Joey Chestnut at a corned beef sandwich eating competition in Arkansas. Bertoletti took home $2,500 for yesterday's win.

A post-win interview with Bertoletti is available on Digest.

Competitive eating upset

The outcome of last week's Hot Springs International Corned Beef Eating Championship have sent shockwaves through the competitive eating community, according to a recent release from the International Federation of Competitive Eating. The underdog victor of this Arkansas event was a young Chicago upstart named Patrick Bertoletti, who edged out veterans Sonya Thomas and Joey Chestnut by taking down 11 Oaklawn corned beef sandwiches in 10 minutes. Thomas and Chestnut, the second and third ranked competitive eaters in the world, tied with 10.75 sandwiches each and Chestnut eventually won second place in an overtime match. Bertolleti took home $3,000.
