"oreos" news and stories

As if fair food couldn't get more exciting - more deep fried foods!

corn dogs
It all started so innocently, didn't it? Some guy speared a hotdog with a stick, dipped it in corn batter, and deep-fried it into a corndog. Now at stat fairs across the country, a corndog is just so...boring. We've got everything from deep-fried cheesecake to Coca-Cola. Remember the winning food in the Texas State Fair food competition last year? A Coke flavored batter deep-fried and served with cola syrup! Dip anything in batter, throw it into hot oil, and you could have a prize-winning food.

And it seems that every year, it gets crazier. At the Texas State Fair, which doesn't even start until the end of September, there are seven entries into the food competition, some of which are reasonable given history, like the Fried Cookie Dough (one step before deep frying an actual cookie, like an Oreo), and others that are just weird, like Fried Guacamole Bites:
  • Deep Fried Latte
  • Fried Cookie Dough
  • Fried Guacamole Bites
  • Country Pride Peach Cobbler on a Stick
  • Fernie's Fried Chili Frito Burrito
  • B.W.'s Original Fried Banana Pudding
  • Mama's Fried Sweet Potato Pie
Chili and Fritos wrapped inside a tortilla, fried, and served with cheese sauce? It's like people are trying their darnedest to make the most heart-stopping foods they can. Literally.

DEA busts purveyors of marijuana-laced snacks

Earlier this week the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency served 11 warrants in the Los Angeles seizing what it called "large quantities of marijuana-laced edibles." Among the items seized were chocolate bars made with cannabutter and Grape Ape Soda whose labels bears a marijuana leaf and the warning "For Medicinal Use Only." Back in the day sugary snacks were for eating after one had smoked the evil weed. This begs the question: Does eating marijuana-laced snacks give you the munchies?

This isn't the first time that the DEA has busted makers of marijuana-laced candy or snacks. Take a look at this photo from last year's arrest of a San Francisco fellow who's now serving 70 months. Along with KeefKat and Buddhafinger (center row), there's Double Puff Oeo (lower left corner) obviously a takeoff on many a stoner's favorite snack, Oreos. Wonder if they're good with hemp milk?

Chocolate Oreo shakes now at Jack in the Box

In honor of a friend (who shall here remain nameless) whose guilty secret is that she likes the Oreo shakes at Jack in the Box, I thought that I would mention that the popular fast food chain will be offering a Chocolate Oreo Cookie Shake for a limited time. It is a twist on the regular Oreo shake, which is made with real vanilla ice cream and Oreo cookies and is widely reputed to be one of the best milkshakes in the fast food sector. The restaurant will still use the same vanilla ice cream, but will be adding bittersweet chocolate syrup to the mix for an extra-chocolaty kick.

So, if you like the shakes from Jack in the Box (you know who you are!), you might want to consider giving one of these a try before the limited time offer expires. Or just start carrying chocolate syrup in your car so you can make your own from the regular ones.

ESPN wants to know which Halloween candy you like

Halloween candyI'm not quite sure why this list is up at ESPN, though it's part of their Page 2 and pretty much anything goes there.

They want to know what your favorite Halloween candies are. Are you a chocolate person, or do you like things like Twizzlers and Air Heads? For the record, I checked off Almond Joy, Dots, Goobers, Heath Bar, Hershey Bar, Hershey Kisses, M&Ms, Milk Duds, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and Riesens.

Of course, this does have a sports twist to it: check out the Candy Bracket, various candies and candy bars going up against each other like it's March Madness. Call it Fall Madness. The candies are separated into four categories: Classic, Convenience, Movie Theater, and Trick or Treat.

Dulce de Leche Oreos

Anna, from Cookie Madness, made a great find the other day at her local supermarket in Austin: Dulce de Leche Oreos. These limited edition cookies aim to pair a slightly milky caramel-flavored cream filling with the classic chocolate wafer cookies of Oreos, though Anna said that the filling tasted mostly buttery with only notes of caramel.

For some reason, the limited edition cookies are not listed on the main Oreo website, though they do get a brief mention on the wiki entry for Oreos and I finally found them listed on the Comida Kraft site, Kraft's spanish-language counterpart, which may be an indication that the cookies are not going to be mass marketed in quite the same way that the peanut butter and mint chocolate Oreos were when those flavors were first released. And buttery or not, the chocolate/caramel combination still sound like a promising one for Oreos, so keep an eye out for them.
