Another great day in the annuals of British culinary endeavours - National Cheese on Toast Day is on the 27th April. Not a cynical marketing campaign to sell more cheese - well maybe - but they also hope to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Relief charity.

National events kick off in London's Leicester Square (quickly followed in my parents kitchen as my Dad does something unspeakable with pre-sliced bread and a slice of Cheddar). Because the day was created by Lancashire Cheese people they are going to rename Leicester Square as Lancashire Square. What jolly japes.

Lancashire producers will help create the world’s biggest cheese on toast, presumably under the world's biggest grill. They are also to hand out cheese on toast samples and hold cheese-making demonstrations.  Bring your own cow.

Welsh Rarebit is to give cheese on toast a posh name. And how posh can you get when it comes in at £345 a slice.

Master chef and author Tom Bridge has reinvented the ubiquitous snack  by including £600-a-lb white Umbrian truffles and £250-a-lb matsutake Chinese mushrooms in a version created for National Cheese on Toast Day. This momentous occasion occurs on the 27th April.

Tom Bridge opted for Warburtons Toastie bread and Lancashire cheese to complete the world's most expensive snack. A version will be auctioned on eBay with the highest bidder winning a personal home visit from the chef who will cook the dish for them.
