Mother's Cookies are Coming Back!

Last October, we learned that Mother's Cookies, the iconic west coast cookie maker who baked up those cute little pink and white frosted animal cookies, was going out of business. People who knew and loved their cookies were heart-broken, so many of us grew up eating those be-sprinkled cookies and couldn't imagine a world without them in it.

Happily, we no longer have to mourn the passing of those cheerful cookies, as the Kellogg Company announced on Wednesday that they will buying the Mother's brand and will be bringing back their most popular flavors, incorporating them into their snacks business unit. Oh happy day!

Mother's cookies that last forever

Yesterday, we wrote about the sad fact that after 92 years of production, those familiar pink and white frosted, animal-shaped cookies are going the way of the Hydrox (although since Hydrox cookies are now back, that might not be the most apt comparison). For those of you who have strong feelings of affection for your frosted Circus Animals, you can now get a tee-shirt honoring them.

You see, upon learning yesterday that the cookies were disappearing, Joshua at Cloth Moth decided to design a tee-shirt bearing their likeness, so that even when they vanish from shelves, they'll always be remembered. To sweeten the deal, for the first 20 orders, he's tossing in a complementary 10 ounce bag of the cookies on which the design is based (he ran out last night and cleaned out the store).

When I think of Mother's Cookies, I immediately slip back into my childhood. I remember Sunday School snack, which often consisted of a tiny cup of grape juice and one or two of those pink and white frosted, animal shaped sugar cookies. During high school, my friends and I would often run to the dirty downtown Safeway for snacks to last us through play rehearsal and often, a bag of Mother's Cookies would return to school with us.

As of this Monday, there will be no more fresh memories of Mother's Cookies. The Oakland, CA-based company abruptly closed their doors and filed for bankruptcy protection, citing the rising costs of fuel and supplies as the reason. A number of people lost their jobs in the closing and the country lost an iconic cookie.
