Food-ish movies to help you digest on Thanksgiving Day

The last thing on your mind once you slowly slip into a food coma after the Big Feast tomorrow is getting up and doing anything active. In my family, it invites all kinds of things like the same stories from relatives, arguments, and questions from Mom and Dad about each of our plans for our futures. The best thing for my sanity, then, is to pop in a DVD to keep everyone quiet and entertained. While there are plenty of movies out there, we at Slashfood are, naturally, particularly fond of movies that have to do with food. Blogger Sean Timberlake has compiled a list of his favorite food movies, some of which are pictured above (each box links to Sean's review).

There are a few more on his list, but what are your favorites? Or are we just overdoing it a little, since the last thing you want to do after stuffing yourself is watching someone else do it on the screen for another two hours?

Spooky sweets from Moonstruck

Moonstruck Chocolate Co. usually focuses on making some of the most beautiful confections that you're likely to see, with creation designs and precision artistry, but for Halloween, they do something a little different. In the spirit of the season, some of their seasonal offerings look more scary than sophisticated, which we love because it seems a little more appropriate for the holiday. The Halloween Horror Pizza is milk chocolate topped with a chocolate truffle eyeball and some gummy goodies that you wouldn't expect to find on any pizza. The Ivory Skull and Wormy Jack are both filled with gummy candies to give anyone who bites into the chocolate a Halloween trick, as well as a treat.

If you can't make up your mind as to which one you want, you can order a combo pack that contains one of each.

Food movies we love: Moonstruck

I remember the first time I realized that I loved Cher. It wasn't when she was swaying sweetly with Sonny, and it wasn't when she belted like a siren, "When you believveeee...." No, my admiration for Cher comes from her Oscar-winning role in a little film from 1987 called, Moonstruck.

Moonstruck not exactly a film about food – it's mostly about love, family and starting over again. But because Nicolas Cage plays a one-handed baker named Ronnie Cammareri and there are subsequently many scenes of his bakery, I think Moonstruck still counts as a food movie.

This amazing film has almost too many highlights to recount in this blog. Of course, there's the opera scene, and then there is the slap-scene, when Cher's Loretta Castorini famously screams, "Snap out of it."

And then there is the scene that is really the reason I regard Moonstruck as one of the greatest Food Movies of all time, wherein Ronnie laments, "Bread is life! Bread is my wife! But where's my life? Where's my wife? I've lost my arm!"

Bread is life, people. Bread is life.

Spring Bonnet Chocolates for Mom

For the Mom who's a fashionista as well as a chocoholic, these chocolates from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. could be just the right thing for Mother's Day. Each of the eight truffles in the ribboned box is shaped like a little bonnet. Handmade and adorned with tiny edible flowers, the adorable confections come in four flavors: raspberry frappe, summermint tea, lemon mousse and orange mousse, all of which are fittingly summery. It's $24 for eight candies, but they're so unique that it's a gift Mom will surely appreciate.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
