China impounds some U.S. food shipments

ChinaHere's the latest battle in the "U.S. said/China said" food wars.

China has impounded shipments of apricots and orange pulp because of "excessive bacteria and mold." According to this article, some believe that this is in retaliation for the various problems the U.S. says it has been having with food and other products imported from China in the past several months. China warns that rules and guidelines about food from the U.S. could be tightened.

It's not only food that the U.S. has complained about. It is also faulty tires, unsafe fake toothpaste, lead paint in toys, and that whole nasty business with pet food.

How long does Wonder bread really last?

I hate it when I lose any kind of food products, whether they are forgotten in the back of the fridge, hidden beneath a couple new rolls of parchment paper in the bread drawer or pushed to the back of the cabinet behind several boxes of cereal. In the best-case scenario, they are old and stale when I find them and, in the worst, they are truly "icky." Alanna, from A Veggie Venture experienced neither situation when she came upon a 10-month old loaf of Wonder Bread that had been long since lost in the depths of her bread drawer. It didn't have a speck of mold on it and smelled fine, with no indication that it might be past its prime. Based on this unintentional experiment, Alanna concluded that Wonder Bread "is truly-truly dead and lifeless cardboard."

I wasn't buying Wonder Bread before and I doubt I'll be changing my shopping habits any time soon. Unless, of course, I'm shopping to replenish my emergency disaster kit and want foods with a really long shelf lift.

Il Buddino pudding mold

Il Buddino are single-serving sized molds that are shaped like little Buddhas. The small, flexible molds hold 125mL each and come in sets of four with one of each of the colors shown above. To use them, simply suspend the mold upside down in a glass of any kind (not included) and fill with pudding, gelatin, mousse or ice cream and freeze or refrigerate before serving. Turn the pudding out onto a plate, squeezing the mold slightly to release it, once it has thoroughly chilled. The molds are microwave and dishwasher safe, but not oven safe, so you won't be able to bake any Buddha cakes with these, but they will make a fantastic presentation the next time you're entertaining. Man dies from eating pancakes

A 19-year old South Carolina man died as a result of eating a batch of pancakes from an expired mix. It wasn't exactly the pancakes that killed him, though. He seems to have had an allergic reaction to a mold that grew in the mix.

As unfortunate as this story is, it can illustrate a valuable point to everyone about checking expiration dates, especially on things that have a long shelf life. While the ingredients, which in the case of pancake mixes consist primarily of flour, can last for a long time in a cool, dry place, unwanted things can develop over time. Sometimes a product can smell or look "off, though a potential problem may not be obvious to the naked eye. "Unseen molds can trigger both minor and severe allergic reactions, so it is best to throw out an old mix than to risk anaphylactic shock - especially if you are prone to allergies.

Fat bug cake pan

It is not clear what the people at Berndes, a German cookware company, were thinking when they designed this pan. It is clear, however, that they did not agonize over the name, calling it simply the Fat Bug Cake Pan. This is not the usual shape you expect to find in a cake pan. You expect roses, hearts and maybe even a butterfly. You definitely do not expect to see a cast aluminum larvae mold. I give them full credit for originality, and the pan is no doubt of high quality, but I still can't see spending $25 to buy a pan shaped like, to put it generously, a "fat bug."
