The best restaurant in Minneapolis - La Belle Vie

La Belle Vie logoMinneapolis is my hometown. I'm currently visiting for the upcoming turkey day, and last night I dined at a very special restaurant which, year after year, wins "Best Restaurant" awards in local publications right and left.

What does "best restaurant" mean, really? There are so many variable traits a restaurant can have. Also, I have long been in love with Cafe Brenda, a gourmet vegetarian and seafood restaurant in Minneapolis' warehouse district. The mushroom pate is to die for. Or what about Ecopolitan's vegan fare, or the delightful lunch at French Meadow Bakery? What about Zelo? How could La Belle Vie be "better" than that?

Well, for one, the atmosphere is enchanting. You walk in, they sit you down, and a server approaches with menus and says "welcome to dinner." You relax. You settle in. You know you are in for a dining "experience."

Midnight Sausage: Minneapolis, MN

Sausages in the case at Kramarczuk's Meat Counter in Minneapolis, MN. From Flickr user Leah Z's Flickr.

I'm posting images of sausage counters the world over each weeknight (and occasionally weekend) witching hour until I run out. Please use the comments section to post links to your Flickr or personal site faves, and perhaps you'll see 'em posted here late some evening.

Schools suspend sale of beef from abused California cows

ground beef processedIn two different articles, two sets of schools -- one set of schools in the Twin Cities, MN, and 100 schools in Washington state -- will not be serving beef that originates from California.

The USDA is investigating the Hallmark slaughterhouse in California, the subject in videos released by The Humane Society of the United States after a six-week undercover investigation. In the video, workers at the meat processing plant repeatedly kicked cows and rammed them with the blades of a forklift. The cows were also said to be sick, which is a major health concern. Sicks cows could be carrying Mad Cow disease or e Coli.

Cooking Light's 20 Best Cities in the US

The newest issue of Cooking Light, which is their 20th anniversary issue, has the magazine's choices for the top 20 cities in the US, based on 15 criteria that they feel embody their "Eat Smart, Be Fit, and Live Well" philosophy. They looked at fitness, health and exercise data from the Centers for Disease Control, the number of parks and recreation areas (and how often they're used) from the Trust for Public Land, restaurant ratings from the Zagat Survey and James Beard Foundation, and the USDA's farmers markets listings. Everything was evened out on a per capita basis and the cities with the most of everything made the top cut.

One of the top ten cities will be featured each month in the magazine this year, so readers will have access to information about all the things that got the city their ranking.

1. Seattle, WA
2. Portland, Ore.
3. Washington, D.C.
4. Minneapolis, MN
5. San Francisco, CA
6. Boston, MA
7. Denver, CO
8. Milwaukee, WI
9. Philadelphia, PA
10. Tucson, AZ

Don't taste the produce unless you want to be arrested

red grapesFirst blueberries, now this?

Apparently, taste-testing one or two grapes in the produce section before you buy them is fine. More than that, though, and it's considered stealing.

When Tameca Griffin was asked by a female police officer to stop snacking on grapes that she had not yet paid for in a St. Paul, MN Rainbow Foods store, she lashed out, chest-butted the officer, and screamed. According to reports, Griffin also punched the officer in the face, pulled out some hair, and possibly caused a concussion.

Griffin is charged with fourth degree assault.

So maybe it wasn't just because she was eating the grapes, though a police spokesperson doesn't know how many grapes Griffin had actually eaten.
