Do Food Network recipes count as old family favorites? Maybe if you're Cindy McCain

Cindy McCain, John McCain and Joe Lieberman.Wow, the food world has its very own political scandal! I am pleasantly surprised. It's about time that we get our turn. I mean, food is something we all have in common, but its always the sex scandals that get noticed.

I'm sure that Cindy McCain wishes this one had been swept under the rug. The wife of Republican presidential hopeful John McCain had a section on the campaign website about old family favorite recipes. That's really cute, a nice way for the voters to get to know the McCain's. The only trouble is that apparently the recipes were lifted directly from the Food Network website.

The LA Times posits that it was probably some lowly intern that had to put the recipe section together, and just put up some recipes. That might work if your boss weren't running for president. Everything he does gets put under the microscope, so plagiarism like that might get caught.

Over at Apartment Therapy's The Kitchn, they had issued a McCain family recipe challenge for readers to test the recipes from McCain's website. The results are in, and even though the recipes didn't turn out to be authentic, you should check them out. Even if the McCain family has never tried them, you can know what to expect if you ever want to!

Obama on a roll

obama sushi rolls
Not Eating Out in New York wrote a post a few days ago that cracked me up: She invented an Obama sushi roll. I don't want to incite political anythings, so I'll just say that I like Obama just fine, and I'd be happy to see him become President -- but I really, really liked the Obama rolls.

The rolls feature crispy fried eggplant and fresh spinach, with some cayenne pepper to capture the Obama spirit. I wonder what a Hillary roll would look like? Maybe some kampyo squash because its stubborn and gummy but also unique? It would definitely need some spicy sauce as well. What about a McCain roll?

That's not a potato!

A McCain potato-processing factory in England had to be evacuated when workers discovered a grenade amongst the potatoes as they were washing the spuds. The factory, which is the largest in Europe, imports many of its potatoes from other countries. It is not uncommon for debris from the first and second world wars to turn up amongst the spuds from Belgium and France, but in the past week the workers not only discovered the grenade, but a shell tip, as well. Following both discoveries, workers vacated the plant while the bomb squad came in and detonated the devices.

Worker safety is of paramount importance, and a company spokesman said that they would have to speak with their suppliers about checking the shipments more thoroughly, as "it is obviously not an efficient use of [the] staff's time if we have to keep evacuating the premises."
