Food Porn: Rum Raisin Shortbread

Anyone who enjoys baking cookies will really appreciate Cathy's blog, my little kitchen, where she has been diligently baking her way through one of the best cookie books you could hope for, Maida Heatter's Book of Great Cookies. Where else could you get feedback on every recipe in a book before you try baking them yourself? This week, she made a batch of mouthwatering Rum Raisin Shortbread. Packed with rum-soaked raisins, these are cookies that even a die-hard chocoholic could crave. Like all good shortbreads, they are light and crumbly, with the raisins add some substance to a cookie that would otherwise just melt in your mouth. Fortunately, I have a copy of the book, so these are definitely going on my holiday cookie tray this year. If you don't have one, though, Amazon has copies for as little as $1.49 - which is suprising for a book that is, for the home baker, priceless.

Maida Heatter book reissue

Maida Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts is being reissued this March after being out of print for a decade. All her books are staples of American baking and the reissue of this volume will introduce a new, younger generation of cooks to her works. Maida's recipes are known for their incredible detail and easy-to-follow style, not to mention their incredibly delicious results. In fact, using a recipe of hers in almost like having your grandmother in the kitchen to guide you along - and a grandmother with a kitchen full of cookies and cakes is one that anyone would want to have. I haven't experienced a bad result from one of her recipes, and I've tried a lot of them. She is very popular among food bloggers. Blogger Cathy, at My Little Kitchen, is baking her way through Maida's entire Book of Great Cookies. Every week she posts a new photo of the next cookie in the book, with a detailed review from her tasting panel. Just reading a few of the comments should be enough to convince anyone that her books are worth a look.
