Cherry Dum Dum - Feast Your Eyes

cherry flavored dum dum lollipop
Oh my, did I love Dum Dums when I was a kid. In the hierarchy of lollipops, they were better than Blow-Pops (the candy was fake tasting and the gum lost its flavor in seconds) and not quite as good as Tootsie-Pops (I will always love the chocolate ones). I was a particular fan of the root beer and cream soda varieties, because they reminded me of my grandmother. But I'd take just about anyone in a pinch.

What was your favorite childhood lollipop?

Thanks Angela, for the lovely picture and the fun trip through the candy memories.

Wasabi-ginger lollipops

Licking a lollipop

Lollyphile lollipops are some of the best lollipops I've ever had. I even devoted a cupcake to their maple bacon lollipops. I had the opportunity to interview Jason Lewis, Lollyphile's founder, on Food Interviews and learned that his company actually started because he had extra absinthe sitting around that he had been selling to a speakeasy. The speakeasy got shot down and there was nothing left to do with all the extra absinthe - except, of course, make lollipops!

Lollyphile's latest flavor, wasabi-ginger, is now on the market. I can't wait to try it! Jason says, "Wasabi-Ginger lollypops are made with no artificial flavoring, and contain real wasabi, adding a little kick to the natural spiciness of the ginger. They are guaranteed to not actually make your sinuses explode."

I wouldn't want to give these out to kids for Halloween (mainly because four lollipops cost ten dollars) but, they would be a perfect, special candy treat for yourself.

Visit Lollyphile to buy some.

Tootsie Pops' "How Many Licks" sweepstakes

It's been 38 years since Boy first asked Mr. Owl how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. And for the past 38 years, Mr. Owl has unflinchingly maintained that it only takes "...a-one ...a-two-hoo! ...a-three." But as we all know, Mr. Owl is a filthy cheater who bites on three.

Tootsie Pops' new "How Many Licks" sweepstakes asks you to submit your own confection calculations. Just visit AskMrOwl.biz and fill out a short entry form with your lick estimate. One grand prize winner will receive $50,000 (and a bonus $5,000 if they guess within 3% of the average licks calculated from all entries combined). Sweeter odds lie in monthly drawings which award five entrants with 27 pounds of assorted Tootsie Roll goodies.

Keep in mind, owls usually only live until 40, so this may be your last chance to prove Mr. Owl wrong before he bites it for the last time. Have any of you (other than Sisqo) conducted the "How Many Licks" experiment?

Today you should eat something on a stick

Caramel Apple Pie on a StickIn fact, here's a challenge: try to eat only things on a stick today.

Yup, today is Something On A Stick Day. So you can spend the day eating corn dogs, lollipops, and Popsicles. Actually, the Food Network show Unwrapped did a whole show about food on a stick (including corn dogs, Bugs Bunny Bars, and Key Lime Pie on a Stick), as did the show Ham on the Street (Caramel Apple Pie on a Stick!)

Of course, you'll want to end the day by toasting marshmallows over a fire (or, um, stove).

Lots of food holidays to celebrate today!

lollipopsFor the most part, food and drink holidays come one per day, but today it's a regular smorgasbord.

Today is National Lollipop Day, National Hot Dog Day and National Ice Cream Soda Day! And that sounds like...well, a stomach ache. I would suggest not eating them all at once but maybe eating them at each meal. Maybe some lollipops for breakfast, a hot dog or two for lunch, and a couple of ice cream sodas for dinner.

Here's a history of the lollipop from Wikipedia, and here are some cool lollipops you can buy from Candy Favorites. Here are some hot dog recipes, including Spanish Hot Dogs and Rice, Joan Lunden's Paprikash, and Hot Dog Ramen. Then make yourself an ice cream soda or two.
