Watermelon Lemonade - Feast Your Eyes

Ice-cold lemonade making glasses sweat on a shady porch, Paul Newman's steamy-as-the-afternoon Quick flirting with JoAnne Woodward's longing-for-love Clara in The Long, Hot Summer; Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant moaning "The Lemon Song." Squeezed lemons may refresh, but they're also hot. Make a pitcher of lemonade and get busy.

Blogger Fakeginger gives us the recipe, courtesy of Rebecca Rather's Pastry Queen cookbook, for a lemonade that is brimming with fruit-luscious watermelon and berries, and slices of lemons, oranges, and limes. And since it's Labor Day, pull up a chair under a shade tree, turn off the cell phone, wrap your hands around a glass of the cold stuff, and take a good breath of what has been a breathtaking summer.

Happy Lemonade Day!

The pairing of sour (puckering fresh lemon juice) and saccharine sugar dates back more than 1500 years ago in Egypt, where honey wine and lemon juice were a popular thirst quencher.

Today, the refreshing swig is still an American summer staple, where it remains a popular roadside attraction in neighborhood family stands, but we were impressed by the exciting enhancements made by the Slashfood Flickr pool members to the three-ingredient drink. Check out their creative new twists to enliven your favorite summer libation:

Kale Lemonade - Feast Your Eyes

Kale usually brings to mind steaming bowls of Portuguese caldo verde -- the hearty soup that's spicy with chouriço and thick with potatoes and the greens that give it its name. Or a variation I love, with lentils and kielbasa (try this recipe, from Kitchen Daily). But just as you peg kale as all homey and comforting, the greens take a walk on the wild side in this lemonade, from a recipe by Natalia Rose in The Raw Foods Detox Diet.

Fuji apples, celery, lemon and ginger join kale in the blender to create a sweet-tart drink that's refreshing, incredibly healthy, and makes you feel like a superhero. Wonder Woman, we've given you notice. Your Lasso of Truth may have competition.

Vodka Rosemary Lemonade Fizz - Feast Your Eyes

The approach of chilly weather may leave many craving warm libations, but this Vodka Rosemary Lemonade Fizz is truly a drink for all seasons. The bloggers of the Bitten Word tackled this Gourmet recipe, which eschews the usual infusion to instead create a simple syrup with sugar, rosemary and lemon juice subbing for water. The syrup can keep for weeks in the fridge and need only be topped with vodka and a dash of club soda to be served.

Rosemary adds a nice mouthfeel and complexity to the crisp, refreshing drink, but almost any herb will serve well in simple syrup, from lavender to Thai basil. Spill your simple syrup recipes or ideas in the comments.
