Washing Kumquats - Feast Your Eyes

Kumquats in a colander
When I was out in Ojai in January, there were kumquat trees scattered all around the Inn where I stayed. Seeing Lelo's huge colander makes me wish I had snuck out under cover of darkness and filled a bag with some of those gorgeous kumquats, because now I want to replicate the Kumquat Vanilla Marmalade she made recently.

Thanks Lelo!

Giant, Leafy Cabbage - Feast Your Eyes

a giant green leafy head of cabbage
This gorgeous, enormous, bright green cabbage comes to us from blogger Lelo in Nopo. She and her partner recently rejoined a Portland-area CSA called Organics to You, that drops a box of organic produce right on their front porch each week (I wish there were CSA programs in Philly that delivered) and a couple of weeks ago, that cabbage was part of their share. Such amazing color!

Thanks Lelo!

Cupcakes With Orange Cream and Candied Orange Peel - Feast Your Eyes

More pictures of these cupcakes can be found in a blog post entitled How to Make Insanely Delicious Cupcakes. I think that that just about sums it up, don't you?

These 'cakes were prepared by Lelonopo and are filled with orange-infused bavarian cream and then topped with slices of candied orange peel. She offers a number of useful tips that will help you make a better cupcake. Thanks Lelo!

Feast Your Eyes: Dragonfly cookiepress

Last December, while I was visiting my parents out in Portland, OR, my mom divested the majority of her cookie cutter collection straight into my suitcase (it was either that or the thrift store, and I couldn't bear to part with cookie cutters I'd used all throughout my childhood). Included in the bag of cutters were two cookie presses, much like the one that is being shown in the picture above. I've used them only once, on a batch of rosemary shortbread. This picture reminds me that I need to pull them out of the pot holder drawer in my kitchen and make something with them (mine are decorated with a teddy bear and a fleur de lis pattern).

Thanks Lelonopo, for adding your image to the Slashfood pool and reminding me to make some cookies!

Feast Your Eyes: Happy 4th of July!

a blueberry and raspberry tart
Happy 4th of July, Slashfood readers! In honor of today's holiday, I bring you a patriotic dessert from blogger/photographer Lelonopo for you to really feast your eyes on. She's created a blueberry and raspberry treat that isn't as aggressively red, white and blue as that famous flag cake, but is still appealingly thematic for the day.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful day today, filled with delicious food, awe-inspiring fireworks and safe, happy times. We look forward to seeing pictures of all the tasty things you created today, so make sure to take photos and upload them to the Slashfood Flickr pool!

Feast Your Eyes: Blueberry apricot crumble

blueberry apricot crumble
Earlier this week, I looked up harvest dates at my favorite u-pick farm in New Jersey, to make sure that I won't miss blueberry season. Last summer, I nearly missed it, and when I finally did get out into the field, it was slim pickings. One of the things I love about picking summer fruit is that it gives you the opportunity to have enough to freeze for the winter and make a batch or two of jam.

In today's featured photo, Lelonopo uses her frozen summer berries in February, to brighten the winter doldrums with a Blueberry Apricot Crumble. Delicious!

Rising food prices impact everyone, not just the nuclear family

front page of the FoodDay
A couple of weeks ago, in my round-up of the Oregonian's FoodDay section, I linked to a story they ran about a budget eating challenge. In it, they asked four Portland-area families to reduce the amount of money they spent on food a week (without making mealtime a joyless experience) and document the experience.

At the time the story ran, I didn't think too much of the families that they chose to participate in the project, but soon after, it was pointed out to me by blogger and Slashfood reader Lelonopo (via twitter) that the Oregonian had only selected families that were white, straight and had children. As a lesbian woman without children, their selection made her feel invisible. Her comment got me thinking about how many different populations FoodDay had ignored when they selected their participants (and everyone has to eat, which would have made diversity in the pool an interesting and valuable thing).

She took her frustration and channeled it in a useful direction, penning a letter to the Oregonian (last one, on page two of the article) that was published today in an article that gathered an assortment of feedback about the article.

What do the rest of you think about the FoodDay's choice to only include white, hetersexual families with children? Who would you have liked to have seen?

Food Porn Daily: Spring asaparagus, cooking clean

gently roasted asparagus on a white plate
In addition the crispness of this image, I love the concept behind this picture. Lelonopo titled this pic spring asparagus: cooking clean and here's her recipe:
Buy asparagus now. In spring. Preheat oven to 450. Wash asparagus well, trim, and lay in single layer in making dish. Squeeze one meyer lemon over asparagus. Season with salt and pepper, and bake in oven for 15-20 minutes. Done.
Read the complete blog post and bask in the perfection of her roasted asparagus.

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
