Nationwide recall on Castleberry food products

castleberry productsThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide recall July 18th of various brands of possibly contaminated Castleberry Food Co. products and then the recall list was expanded even more on July 21, 2007.

The Castleberry's recall includes:
  • 10-ounce cans of Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030000101)
  • Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030099533)
  • Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 1111083942)
  • Castleberry's Chili with Beans, 15 oz can (UPC 3030001015)
  • Bunker Hill Chili No Beans (UPC 7526604112)
  • Cattle Drive Chili with Beans, 15 oz can (UPC 3030001515)
  • Morton House Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 7526665830)
  • Southern Home Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 0788015360)
  • Meijer Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 4125095229)
  • Castleberry's Barbecue Pork, 10 oz can (UPC 3030000402).
All of the recalled products were produced by the Augusta, Ga., company and have "best by" dates from April 30, 2009 to May 22, 2009. The FDA said consumers who have any of the products or any foods made with the products should discard them because of possible botulism contamination.

Note: since this was written the recall has been expanded even more. For a more complete list go here.

Zapatista coffee supports indigenous rights

Zapatista coffee offers not only an amazing cup of joe, but a chance to do something good for those who have less. Cafe Rebelion, formerly know as The Human Bean Company, aims to develop a direct market for products from the Chiapas area of Mexico. Indigenous producers participate in all levels of advice, consent and participation of the coffee project.

Cafe Rebelion eliminates the middle man of the coffee production and enables the farmers of the Zapatista co-operatives to receive the maximum profits for their labors. The coffee is grown among the natural vegetation on indigenous communal land, as opposed to harsh, chemically produced coffee from the large, deforested coffee plantations.

Many people initially buy the Cafe Rebelion products, honey or coffee, in an effort to help with a worthy project. But after experiencing the purity of both the coffee and honey they come back time and again for the smoothe taste. I bought a bag of the light roast at our church and am now 100% devoted to the company and the coffee. I will never again be able to purchase Folger's or Kroger brand coffee. And with the added knowledge that this is a genuinely socially minded company, I can feel good about my addiction.

Sausage, it's not just for breakfast anymore

maple sausage, delicious
anytime
I think this package says it all. I picked up a pound of maple sausage, the delectable links that my family has always called "breakfast sausage" without allowing a title to limit our consumption. No, we eat it from dawn 'til dusk, despite its moniker.

Evidently, Fred Meyer (our local grocery and part of the Kroger gi-nomerate) is worried that the name "breakfast sausage" will limit more conservative families to (horrors!) eat it only during breakfast. They've changed the label so it reads, "maple flavored sausage" and "delicious anytime!"

Thank you, Fred Meyer, for freeing us -- and our sausages -- from the shackles of breakfast.

Supermarket cleanliness study

supermarket trolleysDateline NBC, after interviewing health inspectors and touring dozens of supermarkets all over the country, compiled a list of the 10 least hygienic supermarkets in the country. From expired milk and deli meats to lack of hot water in employee bathrooms, there were many violations that were not immediately obvious to the customer's eyes, but the hidden cameras caught blatantly unhygienic practices and major health and sanitation violations, like dead insects in food products. After analyzing the data from inspections in 2005 of 1,000 stores in 27 states from the each of the top ten grocery chains, the list was final. From fewest violations to most, the least sanitary supermarket chains are:

  • Food Lion
  • Wal-Mart
  • Save-a-Lot
  • Costco
  • Sam's Club
  • Wynn-Dixie
  • Kroger
  • Publix
  • Albertsons
  • Safeway

According to the company responses received by Dateline, all the companies are vowing to improve in every area where a critical violation was received. They emphasize that customers who see a violation should report it to the store manager immediately so the problem can be dealt with.
