A Taste of Dragonfruit - Feast Your Eyes

a spoonful of dragonfruit
Kitt of the Kittalog recently got a chance to taste a Dragonfruit for the first time (thanks to the White on Rice Couple) and pronounces it very tasty and smooth, sort of like perfectly ripe honeydew melon. It's also an incredibly interesting and lovely fruit (to see an image of the outside, click here).

Thanks Kitt!

Feast Your Eyes: Impromptu pickles

canning jar with funnel and pickles
These waning days of summer bring out the country housewife in me (as much as is possible for an unmarried girl in Center City Philadelphia). I have a satisfyingly large stash of homemade jam tucked away under my dining room credenza and I've got three quarts of blueberries stashed away in the freezer. However, I've been looking at all the gorgeous Kirby and Gherkin cucumbers (as well as all the fantastic beets, carrots and string beans) at the farmers market and thinking idly about the possibility of turning them into pickles for munching into the fall and winter.

Kitt posted this picture, of her jar of refrigerator pickles that she threw together in order to use up some leftover dill. My pickle urges are getting stronger.

Thanks Kitt, for adding such a tempting pic to the pool!

Feast Your Eyes: Homemade potato chips

homemade potato chips dusted with fresh dill
There used to be a restaurant in Philadelphia called Treetops. It was several floors up in the Rittenhouse Hotel, looked out onto the park, was pretty fancy and was one of my grandmother's favorite places to eat. She was a pretty fancy woman, so she and the restaurant went well together.

Treetops made their own, deeply ruffled potato chips that they served with every sandwich. The first time I had one of these hand cut, freshly fried chips, the top of my head nearly flew off with the amount of flavor and crunch that the single chip delivered. While the chips pictured above don't have the same ridging as the chips from Treetops, they look like they have similar heft and flavor. I'd like nothing more than to be able to reach through the computer screen and grab a few to crunch on right now. For those of you who'd like to try making these at home, you can find the recipe here.

Feast Your Eyes: A sandwich that says Spring

a sandwich that says spring
There's nothing in life quite like a good sandwich. I described my ideal sandwich in this post, but really, I'm a sucker for any sandwich that contains sprouts. Today's featured image comes from Flickr user and regular Slashfood commentor KittBo. On her blog she lists the contents of the sandwich, "Toasted no-knead bread with cream cheese on one side, hummus on the other, and tomatoes, cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts and watercress in the middle."

Sounds good to me! Thanks KittBo!
