Baby Food. Yum!

What the...??

Sometimes the name of a product is just wrong. Just...wrong. And when you combine it with a photo on the package, it just gets worse. On the right is a photo of an actual product called Baby Bologna. Now, I'm sure the "baby" in the title refers to the size of the bologna. So why the heck did they put a picture of a human baby on the cover, smiling? Bizarre.

But there's more evidence that this is a growing trend. Will we soon see Kidsicles? Tater Tots?

Eat some Puppy Chow with peanut butter

Puppy ChowI have no idea why this recipe over at Kraft is called Puppy Chow. Does it look like Puppy Chow? Are you supposed to give it to your dog? (Probably not - chocolate is bad for dogs.) But it's a funny name and a really easy recipe, so let's try it:

1/2 cup peanut butter
4 squares of semi-sweet baking chocolate
8 cups Honeycomb corn and oat cereal
2 tablespoons of powdered sugar

Gerber goes Latin with Recetas Latinas

gerber latin baby foodNo, I don't have a baby yet, but I will admit that in high school, I used to eat baby food because they were easy to carry to cheerleading practice, and seemed healthier than the normal non-baby snacks.

Gerber has announced a new line of baby foods called Recetas Latinas, fruits, vegetables, dinner, and desserts in Latin flavors. While the fruit and vegetable flavors like mango, manzana (apple) and calabacita (zucchini) sound no more Latin than except for having a Spanish name, the dinners come in flavors like Jamon y Salsa de Papaya (Ham with Papaya Salsa) and Carne Asada.

Now if only Gerber would do an Asian line...pureed unagi sushi as baby food!

Cow bottle is udderly adorable

baby's cow bottle

When babies eat or drink, it's from a bottle, but does it always have to be so boring? Don't kids deserve a little fashion and fun with their formula?

This one, designed like a cow, complete with an udder, is an Italian product made of polycarbonate with a silicone nipple. It's so cute I'd fill it with water and drink from it myself.

Okay, I wouldn't go that far. But I might be willing to babysit my niece more often.

Available at Spakability.

Slashfood Ate (8): Foods eaten a lot as a kid, rarely as an adult

yummy marshmallows? not anymoreWhat is it exactly that happens to our taste buds between the ages of 11 and 20? Why do we eat certain foods when we are kids but abandon almost completely when we become adults? When you're an adult, and you move into different social circles and experience new foods and you're a little more adventurous, you can say that you do or don't eat certain foods because your palate has become more mature (or whatever the food-centric phrase is). Unless, of course, you're the type of nine-year-old who used to eat caviar, risotto, Caesar salad, or elaborate chicken dishes.

Below are the 8 foods I loved and always ate as a kid, but don't (or rarely) eat now. What's on your list?

1. Meatloaf: I don't eat much meat in general anymore (just chili during the fall and winter and maybe a random pepperoni pizza here and there), but my mom used to make meatloaf once a week and I loved it. It's probably because (in addition to the above don't-eat-much-meat factor) I don't want to take the time to make it, and if I do have hamburger, it won't be in loaf form.

2. Marshmallows: Used to toast them on the flame of my old stove in the house I lived in as a kid (once started a small fire, but that's a story for another day). Used to plop them in hot chocolate, and even ate them out of the bag as a snack. Now I never have them (nor do I have anything that has marshmallows in it).

Tip of the Day

When cooking apples, save your apple cores and peels. Boil them for a half hour, simmer them, and save them for the next apple pie!
